Pleiku is a capital city in central Vietnam, situated in that nation's central highland area. Pleiku is the capital of the Gia Lai region. Many years ago, it was populated primarily by the Jarai and Bahnar ethnic groups, sometimes called the Montagnards or Degar. Today, it is mainly inhabited by the Kinh ethnic group. The town is the centre of the urban district of Pleiku which covers an area of 262 km². As of 2003 surveys, the district had a population of 186,765. The city sits at the junction of numerous national roads—National Route 14 to Kon Tum in the north and Buôn Ma Thuột in the south and National Route 19 to Stœng Trêng in Cambodia situated in the west using Ratanakiri area and to Bình Định area in the east. Pleiku Airport is a local airport situated near the city of Pleiku within Gia Lai area in southern Vietnam. Pleiku Airport was little more than an untrained airstrip in December 1962 when it was selected by the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (VNAF) as Air Base 62.
