Sanya is a tropical resort city on the southern tip of Hainan Island, the southernmost province of China, and it is often described as China's answer to Hawaii. Palm-lined bays, warm water, rainforest-covered hills and a year-round beach climate draw holidaymakers from all over the country, especially when northern China freezes in winter. For travellers from Singapore, flights to Sanya offer a relaxed beach break with a distinctly Chinese flavour, plus duty-free shopping, seafood markets and island culture.
Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) is on the western side of the city, in Tianya District, set back from the shore of Sanya Bay. It is one of the busiest airports in southern China for leisure travel and the main gateway to the south of Hainan, while the provincial capital Haikou, at the northern end of the island, has its own airport.
The airport handles both domestic and international flights, with separate check-in areas and immigration facilities for international passengers. Duty-free shops are a feature of travel on Hainan, and many visitors pick up purchases on departure, so it pays to arrive early during busy holiday periods.
The airport is fairly close to downtown Sanya and to the hotels along Sanya Bay, so taxis and ride-hailing cars are the most popular way to reach your accommodation. Airport buses serve the city and the main bays, and many resorts in Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay, further east, arrange transfers. For trips elsewhere on Hainan, the island's high-speed ring railway links Sanya with Haikou and other coastal towns.
A direct flight to Sanya from Singapore is available at some times of year, depending on which airlines are flying the route in that season. On Traveloka, search Singapore (SIN) to Sanya (SYX) and turn on the direct-flights filter first; if no non-stop service shows for your dates, clear the filter to compare one-stop options through Chinese or other Asian hubs, and weigh up the total travel time and layover length.
If Sanya fares are high for your dates, it is also worth checking flights into Haikou, then taking the east-coast high-speed train south. This works well for travellers who want to see both ends of Hainan on the same trip.
Sanya is tropical and warm all year. The dry season from roughly November to April is the most comfortable, with sunny days and lower humidity, and it is when crowds from northern China arrive to escape the cold. Summer and early autumn are hot and humid, with heavy showers and a risk of typhoons, so keep an eye on forecasts and choose flexible tickets for those months.
Demand peaks sharply around the Spring Festival, when Sanya is one of China's most sought-after holiday destinations, and again during the Labour Day and National Day holidays. From Singapore, fares also tend to rise around the June and December school holidays. Check the fare-by-month chart on this page, try moving your dates by a few days, and set a Price Alert if you are travelling close to Chinese New Year.
East of the city, Yalong Bay has a long crescent of fine white sand and clear water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Behind it, the Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park has rope bridges and viewpoints over the bay.
Close to the city centre, Dadonghai is a lively, easy-going beach with seafood restaurants and bars nearby, and it is a good choice if you want to walk to dinner rather than stay in a secluded resort.
West of the city, this large Buddhist park is home to the towering Guanyin of the South Sea statue, standing on a platform in the sea, surrounded by gardens and temples.
Its name means the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea, and the giant boulders on this beach are carved with calligraphy. It is a symbolic spot in Chinese culture and a popular photo stop.
A short boat ride from the mainland near Haitang Bay, this small island is known for clear water, diving and snorkelling, and water sports off its beaches.
Sanya Bay, near the airport and downtown, has a long public beach, a waterfront promenade and good-value accommodation, and it is the best place in the city for sunsets. Dadonghai suits travellers who want restaurants, shops and nightlife within walking distance.
Yalong Bay is the classic resort area, with quieter beaches and international-style resorts set back from the sand. Haitang Bay, further north-east, has newer resorts and the large duty-free shopping complex, while Qingshui Bay beyond it is quieter still, good for travellers who want space and calm.
The Hainanese classic that inspired chicken rice around Southeast Asia: tender poached chicken served with fragrant rice and a dipping sauce of ginger, garlic and lime.
These meaty crabs from Hainan's east coast are prized for their rich roe and are usually steamed simply to show off the flavour.
Chicken pieces are cooked in fresh coconut water at the table, making a light, naturally sweet broth that is one of the island's favourite shared meals.
A chilled dessert of coconut milk or syrup over mung beans, red beans, jelly, fruit and crushed ice, perfect in the tropical heat.
At Sanya's busy First Market, you buy fresh fish, prawns and shellfish at the stalls and have nearby restaurants cook them to order.
With warm seas, big bays and food that feels familiar to anyone who loves chicken rice, Sanya makes an easy tropical getaway. Compare flights to Sanya on Traveloka, check the direct filter for your dates, and set a Price Alert so you can book when fares to Hainan dip.
