Semarang is the capital of Central Java, a port city on Java's north coast where Dutch colonial streets, Chinese temples and Javanese markets sit side by side. It is a practical base for business in the province and a gateway inland to the cool Dieng Plateau, the hill temples of Gedong Songo and, further south, Borobudur. If you are comparing flights to Semarang from Singapore, you will usually find connections through Jakarta and other Indonesian cities, and a nonstop option when one is scheduled.
Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport (SRG) is the main airport for Semarang and much of Central Java. It handles busy domestic routes to Jakarta, Bali, Sumatra and Kalimantan, and it has also handled a small number of international services.
The airport sits on low coastal land on the western side of Semarang, close to the Java Sea and not far from the city centre. Its setting near fish ponds and wetlands gives the arrival approach a distinctive, watery view.
A modern terminal, opened to replace the older building, handles both domestic and international flights under one roof. It has food outlets, prayer rooms, ATMs and shops selling local snacks, so you can pick up souvenirs right before you fly home.
Airport taxis and ride-hailing cars are the most common way into town, with the Simpang Lima and Pemuda areas a short drive east. The city's Trans Semarang bus network has a route that serves the airport, a low-cost option if you travel light. Car rental with a driver is popular for trips out to the hills and temples.
Nonstop services between Singapore and Semarang have operated on and off, so tick the Direct filter when you search to see if one is on sale for your dates. If there is no nonstop, connecting through Jakarta is the usual choice, and Surabaya or other Indonesian hubs can also work well.
Some travellers take the ferry from Singapore to Batam and then book a domestic Batam to Semarang flight from Hang Nadim Airport. Compare that combination with a connection via Jakarta, allowing plenty of buffer for the ferry and airport check-in. For regional trips, Yogyakarta's airport is another option if your plans centre on Borobudur.
Semarang has a tropical climate that stays hot and humid all year. The drier months run from roughly May to September, which suits temple visits and mountain trips. From November to March, heavy afternoon rain is common, and low-lying parts of the city can flood after downpours.
Demand for flights to Semarang peaks around Lebaran at the end of Ramadan, when millions of Indonesians travel home to Central Java, as well as at Christmas and New Year. From Singapore, add the June and December school holidays and Chinese New Year. Use the fare-by-month chart on this page and set a Price Alert for your preferred dates.
The "thousand doors" building was once the headquarters of the Dutch-era railway company. Its arched corridors and stained glass make it the city's best-known landmark.
The restored old town, sometimes called Little Netherlands, has colonial warehouses, cafés and the domed Blenduk Church at its heart.
A striking red Chinese temple complex honouring the admiral Zheng He, blending Chinese and Javanese traditions.
A vast mosque with hydraulic umbrellas in its courtyard and a tall minaret offering views across Semarang to the sea.
A cluster of small Hindu temples scattered across the cool slopes of Mount Ungaran near Bandungan, in the hills south of the city.
Simpang Lima, the main square, is the centre of shopping and evening food stalls and a convenient base for first-time visitors. Jalan Pemuda links it with Lawang Sewu and the old town. Kota Lama suits travellers who like heritage streets and cafés, while the hilly Candisari and Gombel areas offer cooler air and views over the city lights. For a mountain escape, Bandungan is a popular weekend retreat.
The city's signature spring roll is filled with bamboo shoots, egg and prawn or chicken, and served fried or fresh with a sweet sauce.
Milkfish pressure-cooked until even the bones are soft, then fried and eaten with sambal. It is also a favourite gift to take home.
Fried tofu, prawn fritters, rice cakes and cabbage, all covered in a peanut and shrimp paste sauce.
A light, clear chicken soup with rice noodles and bean sprouts, usually eaten with fried side dishes such as satay of quail eggs.
A chewy coconut and glutinous rice cake sold in paper wrappers. It began in Babat, East Java, but Semarang made it famous, and it is now the city's classic snack for the journey home.
