Yangon, once called Rangoon, is the largest city in Myanmar and its main commercial centre. Its skyline is dominated by the gilded spire of the Shwedagon Pagoda, while downtown streets are lined with colonial-era buildings, busy tea shops and markets that spill onto the pavements. Many people search for flights to Yangon to visit family, do business or begin a journey to Bagan, Mandalay or Inle Lake. Singapore has a large Myanmar community, so this is a well-travelled route, especially around festivals and year-end. Because conditions in Myanmar can change, read the latest travel advisories before you finalise any plans.
Yangon International Airport, code RGN (the city itself is often shortened to YGN), is in Mingaladon township on the northern edge of the city. It is the busiest airport in Myanmar and the main international gateway. Downtown Yangon lies to the south, near the river, and the road in runs through the city's greener residential townships on the way.
The airport has separate terminal buildings for international and domestic flights. Check which terminal your flight uses on your e-ticket before heading out, particularly if you are connecting to a domestic flight to Mandalay, Bagan or Heho on a separate booking, since you will need to collect your luggage and move between buildings.
Airport taxis booked at the counter in the arrivals hall are the most common way into the city, and ride-hailing apps are available as well. Many accommodation providers can also arrange a pick-up. Traffic in Yangon can be heavy during rush hour and in the rainy season, so leave extra time when heading back to the airport for a departure.
Singapore to Yangon is one of the more established links between the two countries, and nonstop options are often available. To see what is flying on your dates, search the route and switch on the direct-flight filter. If you choose a connection, the stopover is usually in a nearby hub such as Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Compare the total journey time, baggage allowance and layover length, since generous luggage limits matter to many travellers flying home to Yangon with gifts.
Yangon has three broad seasons. The cool, dry months from about November to February are the most pleasant for sightseeing, with clear skies over the pagodas. The hot season follows in March and April, peaking just before the monsoon, and the rainy season runs from around late May to October with heavy daily downpours. April also brings Thingyan, the water festival that marks the Myanmar New Year, when the city is splashed with water for days and many businesses close.
From Singapore, flights fill up ahead of Thingyan, during the June and December school holidays, around Chinese New Year and over the year-end period when many families travel home. Booking well ahead for those dates helps, and the fare charts on this page show when prices have recently eased.
The most sacred Buddhist site in Myanmar, this golden stupa sits on Singuttara Hill and glows at sunset. Remove your shoes at the entrance, dress with shoulders and knees covered, and walk clockwise around the terrace with the pilgrims.
Standing at a busy roundabout in the heart of the city, Sule Pagoda is surrounded by some of the best colonial architecture in Asia, including grand former government offices and old trading houses along Pansodan Street.
A covered market with cobbled lanes where you can buy longyi, lacquerware, jade, textiles and handicrafts. Browse slowly and compare prices between stalls.
A peaceful lake with a wooden boardwalk and views of the Shwedagon Pagoda. The gilded Karaweik, a replica royal barge, floats on its eastern shore.
Home to a huge reclining Buddha with intricately decorated feet, this temple is quieter than the Shwedagon and a short ride from the city centre.
Downtown townships such as Kyauktada and Pabedan keep you close to Sule Pagoda, the markets and heritage streets, with plenty of food stalls nearby. Dagon and Bahan, near the Shwedagon and Kandawgyi Lake, are greener and calmer. Sanchaung and Kamayut have a local neighbourhood feel with cafes and easy access to the university area, while the Inya Lake area to the north is quieter, with lakeside streets, offices and a shorter drive to the airport.
Myanmar's unofficial national dish: rice noodles in a fish broth thickened with chickpea flour and flavoured with lemongrass, often topped with crispy fritters. Locals eat it for breakfast.
A tea leaf salad of fermented tea leaves mixed with fried beans, peanuts, sesame, tomato and garlic. It is crunchy, tangy and served everywhere from tea shops to family homes.
Rice noodles with a mildly spiced tomato and chicken or pork sauce, originally from the Shan hills and now a Yangon staple.
Wheat noodles in a rich coconut milk and chicken curry broth, served with lime, chilli and crunchy toppings.
