Dong Hoi is the capital of Quang Binh province, a quiet coastal city on Vietnam's narrow central strip, where the Nhat Le River meets the sea. Most visitors arrive for one reason: it is the closest airport to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, home to some of the largest and most spectacular caves on Earth. Taking a flight to Dong Hoi saves a long overland journey from Hue or Hanoi and puts you within easy reach of the caves, jungle and uncrowded beaches.
Dong Hoi Airport (VDH) is a small airport, mainly handling domestic flights, on the northern edge of the city, a short drive from the centre and the riverside. Phong Nha town, the base for the national park, lies further to the northwest, inland along the Son River.
The airport has one compact terminal serving domestic flights, mainly from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Facilities are simple, with a few cafés and service counters, and the short walk from the gate to the kerb makes arrivals quick.
Taxis wait outside the terminal and ride-hailing apps work in the city, which is the easiest way to reach central Dong Hoi or the beach at Nhat Le. For Phong Nha, most travellers book a private car or a transfer arranged by their accommodation, while some hotels in Phong Nha town can organise pick-ups for arriving flights. Local buses and minibuses also link Dong Hoi with Phong Nha during the day.
There is no nonstop service from Singapore to Dong Hoi, so the usual plan is to fly from Changi to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and connect onto a domestic flight. Use the stops filter on Traveloka to see one-stop options, and compare connection times so you are not left with a long wait at the hub.
Many searches for a flight to Hoi An land on Dong Hoi by mistake. Hoi An is further south and is reached through Da Nang, not Dong Hoi. If your trip covers both the Phong Nha caves and Hoi An, a practical route is to fly into Dong Hoi, travel south by road or train through Hue, and fly home from Da Nang.
Central Vietnam has its own weather pattern. The dry, sunny months generally run from around February or March to August, with the hottest weather in early summer when a dry wind from Laos can push temperatures high. From roughly September to December the region gets its heavy rain, and storms and floods can close cave tours and roads for days at a time.
For caving, spring and early summer are ideal, and the major multi-day cave expeditions only operate in the drier part of the year. Demand from Singapore rises in the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year, while Vietnamese domestic travel peaks around Tết and in the summer holiday months, when domestic seats into Dong Hoi fill up earlier.
The park's namesake cave is visited by boat along an underground river, gliding past chambers of stalactites before stepping onto sandy banks inside. Boats leave from the riverside in Phong Nha town.
Stretching for kilometres, Thien Duong or Paradise Cave is famous for its towering, cathedral-like chambers. A long wooden boardwalk lets visitors of most fitness levels explore the first section comfortably.
Son Doong is widely known as the largest cave passage in the world, and it can only be visited on licensed multi-day expeditions that book out far in advance. Shorter adventure tours to caves such as Hang En or Tu Lan offer jungle trekking, swimming and camping for travellers who want a taste of real exploration.
A short ride from the city centre, where the Nhat Le River reaches the sea, this long sandy beach is lined with seafood restaurants and is quiet compared with Vietnam's busier resort coasts.
In central Dong Hoi, the restored gate and remaining walls of the old citadel sit by the river, a reminder of the city's history and of the damage it suffered during the war years.
Stay in central Dong Hoi near the river if you want restaurants, cafés and easy access to the airport. The Nhat Le Beach area is better for a seaside break with morning swims. For cave tours, Phong Nha town and the nearby Bong Lai valley are the best bases, with homestays and farm stays set among rice fields and limestone hills.
Quang Binh's signature noodle soup uses thick, chewy rice noodles in a light broth with fish or pork. It is a popular breakfast and a comforting bowl after a wet day.
Small, translucent tapioca dumplings filled with shrimp and pork, wrapped in banana leaves and served with chilli fish sauce.
Chewy, sun-dried sweet potato is a local speciality and a favourite snack to bring home.
Squid, crab, clams and fish are grilled or steamed at the beachfront restaurants along Nhat Le.
Caves, rivers and an easy-going coastline are waiting in Quang Binh. Search Dong Hoi flights on Traveloka, set a Price Alert for your dates and travel with your e-ticket on your phone.
