Iloilo City is the capital of Iloilo province on Panay Island and the main hub of Western Visayas in the central Philippines. It is known for its gracious Spanish-era churches, a restored riverside esplanade, grand heritage mansions and some of the country's most comforting noodle soups. People book flights to Iloilo to visit family, attend the Dinagyang festival, eat their way through the city or use it as a jumping-off point for Guimaras, the Gigantes Islands and the rest of Panay.
Iloilo International Airport, code ILO, is located in the town of Cabatuan, north-west of Iloilo City. It replaced the old airport in the Mandurriao district and is the main gateway for the province, as well as a convenient entry point for Guimaras and southern Panay.
The airport has a single passenger terminal that handles both domestic and international flights. It is straightforward to navigate, with check-in, security and arrivals all close together, so you can clear the building quickly after landing.
Airport shuttle vans run between the terminal and key points in the city, including the business districts and main malls. Metered taxis wait outside arrivals, and ride-hailing works well for trips into Iloilo City. The drive follows a main provincial highway through rice fields, so allow extra time during morning and evening peaks.
Travellers from Singapore usually reach Iloilo with one stop, most often through Manila, with other routings via Cebu or regional hubs. International services into ILO have come and gone over the years, so use the direct-flights filter on Traveloka to see whether a non-stop option operates on your dates, and otherwise compare one-stop itineraries by total travel time.
If you connect through Manila, check whether your flights arrive and depart from different terminals and leave enough time for the transfer, particularly on separate tickets. For trips that also cover Boracay or northern Panay, compare flying into Iloilo and travelling overland against flying directly into the airports closer to the island. Adding a return from a different city can save a long backtrack.
Iloilo is warm year-round. The drier months run roughly from December to May, with March to May the hottest, and the rainy season with occasional typhoons stretches from about June to November. January is the liveliest time in the city, when the Dinagyang festival fills the streets with drumming, dancers and colourful tribal costumes.
On the Singapore side, the school holidays in June and December and the Chinese New Year break are when seats go fastest. Christmas and Holy Week are also busy across the Philippines, as many people travel home to their provinces. A long landscaped walkway along the river, popular for jogging, cycling and evening strolls. It is a showpiece of the city's urban renewal and a good place to watch the sunset.
South of the city, this fortress-like church of golden sandstone is part of the UNESCO-listed Baroque Churches of the Philippines. Its carved facade shows a coconut tree and local scenes in a unique folk style.
These old districts are home to handsome churches, the Jaro Cathedral with its separate belfry and grand ancestral houses that tell the story of Iloilo's sugar-era wealth.
The downtown heritage street is lined with restored early twentieth-century commercial buildings. It is best explored on foot, with plenty of snack stops along the way.
A short boat ride from Iloilo City, Guimaras is famous for sweet mangoes, quiet beaches and island-hopping. It makes a relaxed day trip or overnight escape.
Mandurriao, around the Iloilo Business Park and the Smallville area, is modern, well connected and full of restaurants. The City Proper puts you close to Calle Real, the esplanade and the port for Guimaras. Jaro offers a quieter, more residential feel with heritage streets nearby, while Molo suits travellers who want to be near its famous church and plaza.
Iloilo's most famous dish: egg noodles in a rich pork broth, topped with sliced pork, liver, crushed chicharon and spring onions. Named after the district where it originated.
A comforting soup of delicate pork dumplings in a clear, gingery chicken broth. The "pancit" here refers to the thin wonton wrappers rather than noodle strands.
Kadios, baboy and langka: a hearty sour soup of pigeon peas, pork and young jackfruit soured with batwan fruit, found in Ilonggo home kitchens.
Some of the sweetest mangoes in the country come from the neighbouring island. Try them fresh, dried or in desserts during the summer harvest.
