Cheap flights to Muscat, the capital of Oman

Muscat is the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, a low-rise city of white buildings strung along the Gulf of Oman between rugged brown mountains and the sea. It has none of the glass towers of its Gulf neighbours; instead you find old forts, busy souqs, quiet beaches and one of the most beautiful mosques in the region. Travellers from Singapore book a flight to Muscat for a calm city break, for the desert and mountain scenery of inland Oman, or as a stopover on the way to Europe and Africa.

About Muscat International Airport (MCT)

Location

Muscat International Airport is in the Seeb area, on the coastal plain to the west of the older parts of the capital. Muscat is a long, spread-out city, so the ride to your accommodation depends a lot on where you stay: the business districts of Qurum and Al Khuwair are closer, while Mutrah and Old Muscat sit further east along the coast.

Terminals

The airport has a single large, modern passenger terminal that handles international and domestic flights. Arrivals, immigration and baggage reclaim are under one roof, which keeps things simple after a long flight. Before you land, check the entry requirements for your passport so that immigration goes smoothly.

Getting to and from the airport

Airport taxis wait outside arrivals, and local taxi-booking apps also operate in the capital. Public buses run by the national operator Mwasalat link the airport with parts of the city. Many visitors rent a car here, because the best of Oman, from wadis to mountain villages, is easiest to reach by road.

Direct and connecting flights to Muscat

Depending on the season, there may be nonstop options from Changi, and many itineraries connect through hubs in the Gulf, South Asia or Southeast Asia. On Traveloka, tick the Direct filter to see only nonstop flights, then compare layover length and arrival time for the connecting ones.

Muscat International Airport is the main gateway to Oman. Salalah in the far south has its own airport, so if you want to combine the capital with the green monsoon landscapes of Dhofar, look at a multi-city booking or a separate domestic flight rather than a long drive.

When to fly to Muscat

Muscat is hot and dry. From around May to September daytime heat is intense and humidity along the coast can be high, which makes long days of sightseeing tiring. The cooler months from October to April are the peak season, with warm sunny days, pleasant evenings on the corniche and good conditions for hiking and desert camping.

From Singapore, the June and December school holidays and Chinese New Year are the busiest times to travel, so book early if your dates fall then. Also note that during Ramadan many restaurants close in daytime and opening hours change. Compare months with the fare chart on this page and set a Price Alert if you are flexible.

Popular places in Muscat

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

The city's landmark mosque is known for its vast prayer hall, a huge hand-woven carpet and a spectacular chandelier. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome at set morning hours, with modest dress required.

Mutrah Corniche and Souq

A long seafront promenade leads to Mutrah Souq, a maze of covered lanes selling frankincense, silver jewellery, spices and textiles. Evening is the liveliest and coolest time to go.

Old Muscat

The walled old town holds the ceremonial Al Alam Palace, flanked by the Portuguese-era Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts on the rocks above the harbour.

Royal Opera House Muscat

This elegant performing-arts venue in Shatti Al Qurum hosts opera, concerts and ballet, and its marble halls and gardens are worth seeing even if you do not catch a show.

Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab

Along the coast road south-east of the city, the turquoise Bimmah Sinkhole and the swimming pools of Wadi Shab are two of the most popular day trips from Muscat.

Where to stay in Muscat

Qurum and Shatti Al Qurum are popular with first-time visitors for their beaches, parks and restaurants. Al Khuwair and Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos are practical, central neighbourhoods with plenty of dining. Mutrah puts you right by the corniche and souq for an old-town atmosphere, while Al Mouj, a newer waterfront development in the west, is close to the airport and has a marina and seaside promenade.

Food to try in Muscat

Shuwa

Lamb or goat marinated in spices, wrapped in leaves and slow-cooked in an underground pit, traditionally made for Eid and family celebrations.

Mashuai

A whole grilled or spit-roasted kingfish served with lemon rice, a simple dish that shows off Oman's long coastline.

Omani halwa

A sticky, glossy sweet flavoured with rosewater, saffron and cardamom, often served with coffee to guests.

Kahwa and dates

Omani coffee, lightly roasted and spiced with cardamom, is poured in small cups with a plate of dates, the classic gesture of welcome.
