The food at the Vanilla Cafe is fantastic, prepared with great care by the chef and his staff from a very clean kitchen. No wonder that so many come to enjoy the ambience, the food the coffee and the great service, surrounded by dignified huts occupied by local artists. Feels like a tropical Paris! The accommodation of about 16 units in 8 buildings is spacious, beautifully presented and thoughtfully equipped. Wifi and satellite tv excellent. A very convenient location for visiting the southwest - bus service at the gate but a car would be best. Excellent value for money. We can’t say enough how much we appreciate the genuine kindness shown to us by Felanie the manageress in looking after our needs.

Myself and a friend booked 2 rooms at the Vanilla House this past week and we were so impressed with every aspect of the place. It's very peaceful and perfectly located for hiking trails at la Morne and Chamarel and everywhere along the Riviere Noire. Food/Service: the food was very good, we mainly had breakfast at Vanilla Cafe and it was always spot on. The Full English is better than any I've had in England! Not greasy at all and really perfectly cooked. The staff are so friendly with just the right amount of attention (e.g. not standing over you or nowhere to be found). Rooms: I LOVE these rooms, the style of the building is like a wartime bunker and this is contrasted inside where they are perfect studios with clean lines, fresh decor and everything you need. Outside: the communal areas include the Vanilla Cafe, a small library, a pool and various seating areas. This central area is where the wifi is. I would have liked to have wifi in the rooms but in fact it was no problem at all to wander the few meters to the communal area to get wifi (which had a very strong signal in that area). We understand from the owner, David, that the communal areas will be improved even further and expanded to include a spa among other things. The whole area would be amazing for a big party/wedding. Thanks so much to David and Veronique and all the staff at Vanilla House for an absolutely wonderful stay!

I was floored when I saw that my "room" was actually a private cabin. It was spacious and nicely decorated with a kitchenette. The location is very close to a number of historical sites, tourist attractions, beaches and the Black River National Park. Nestled among expensive and exclusive resorts, it is a very good deal and convenient without the pretension. Excellent breakfast that was included in the price. However, it would help if they could have big signs on both sides of their gate. I drove one way and missed the place at first because there were so many holiday houses and I couldn't see the sign.

I had an amazing time staying athere Vanilla House. The owner and staff were all so accommodating and went out of their way to ensure I had a good stay. The rooms are decorated to a very high standard, the location is blissful (if you want your peace and quiet), and conveniently located near bus routes, La Balise Marina, Black River National Park and Tamarin Beach. If you want a peaceful break, with lush green surroundings, then I'd suggest you look no further. Great value for money.

I was travelling solo but at the initiative of very helpful Isabel, I made friends with another fellow solo female traveller. Isabel went over and beyond during Alert 3 of Cyclone Edilson in ensuring our comfort despite having to stay indoors for about 32 hours. The rest of staff are friendly and the driver of recommended car hire for excursions also very nice. As most reviews have indicated, the main drawback of guesthouse is its lack of close proximity to the beach. As there are other sites to see within driving distance (in fact almost whole of island is easily within driving distance), guests are well advised to rent a car. Otherwise, bikes are provided by the guesthouse. Alternatively, the bus stop is just in front of the guesthouse and buses go to La Preneuse, Tamarin and Flic en Flac among others. Finally, note the pool is nice but not big enough for laps. Enjoy your stay!
