The staff were very friendly and helpful. They were able to organise taxis and have food delivered. For a 3 star hotel the facilities were very good with a bar that opened late. If you want to eat in an area id provided for you to eat a take away which is more pleasant than eating it in your room.

The staff is absolutely exceptional. Very kind, polite, helpful and the nicest people. The location is pretty good too - about a 15-20min walk to old Funchal. The walk back could be longer due to the uphill but nothing too crazy. Parking can be tricky but I never had an issue parking at the lot that was designated for the buildings but not for the hotel. The hotel could really use an upgrade on their rooms however. Possibly a fan as it can get quite hot. The walls are very thin and you can hear almost every noise if you're a light sleeper. I'm pretty sure the TV in my room was from 1960s. But overall, you get your money's worth. Still a great place to stay because of their amazing staff.

The staff is absolutely amazing here! The customer service is superb (yet very subtle). For example, one evening I used an extra blanket and the next day the staff noticed that and brought a space heater for me to use. Another day, the staff brought a container to organize my bathroom supplies. They also kept track of my itinerary and left reminders for me when I had a tour scheduled. All of the staff members that I spoke with were extremely pleasant and nice. I very highly recommend this hotel!

Without a doubt the staff/family make this hotel the best ever. You do need a car to really enjoy this place but the extra benefits of this family run hotel makes it worth while. (I would point out that you should really have a car on Medeira anyway to really experience it.) The rooms are not large but adequate and efficient. The public areas are exceptional in terms of spaciousness and what is available (Patio, card room, tv room etc.) Highly recommend Residencial do Vale!

Clean hotel and room, great view from up the hill, stuff spoke hardly any English, the facilities are quite old, the breakfast had a wide selection but the cold meat had mold on it twice... my ceiling light fused but I got it repared the same day and they even put some candy in my room as an excuse. Mixed feelings about the hotel. As for the price it is okay. Don‘t expect to much.

Pros: clean room, lovely and helpful staff, good breakfast. Cons: quite small room; location of the hotel itself is very steep. You must be very fit enough to climb up the hill. It’s a 45 degree angled road before you reach the hotel; the internet service is not available in the rooms, only limited to the common living room and immediately outside the reception areas; no fridge nor kettle in room (only by request); rooms not noise proof; key operated gate and rooms (a single key could have made a difference); needs air conditioning especially after a long warm sunny day stroll of the city; not 24 hour help desk can’t ask for something after midnight; need some improvements to give a complete transformation of the hotel in general.

The B&B is a 10-15 minute walk north of Funchal town centre in a fairly residencial area. This does mean it's up a steep hill so bear this in mind if you are on foot! The B&B itself is well run by friendly and helpful staff who spoke excellent English. My room was clean and comfortable with a good shower and I had a nice view eastwards out over the town and Atlantic Ocean (see photo). Breakfast was buffet continental with good coffee and a decent selection of rolls, fruit, cheese etc. There is a small bar by reception where you can get a beer and sit on the terrace. Staff offered to help arrange trips and transfers but I had already organised these before travelling. All in all it was good value for money and an enjoyable stay. My only minor gripe is not with the accommodation. As I mentioned it is in a residencial area where most people seem to keep their dogs in the back yards and several keep chickens. This does mean it can be noisy with barking dogs and crowing cockerels at any time of day or night, although I did get sort of used to it after a few days!

The hotel itself was very well presented on arrival, it has a locked gate that reception can buzz you in and during check in your given keys so can come and go as you please. Checking in was very quick and easy and like most buildings on the island had multiple levels but easy to navigate. The room was a nice size and I had a lovely view of the city and mountains. Breakfast was ready on time and never felt rushed. The staff were very helpful and friendly, Alessandro on the front desk provided excellent information about good but not expensive restaurants, (3 courses and a beer for about 20 euro's), lots of information about the island, booked the tours which were collected at a pre arranged time at the bottom of the hill, about 5 minutes away. The tours were very good for the most part, I wouldn't recommend the lava caves as nothing really note worthy about them, the East tour and West tours were very scenic and informative and I would highly recommend a Lavada walk (Aqueduct) to explore the centre of the island and see beautiful scenery. For the Lavada walk I would ask for advice if you suffer from vertigo and take a torch as some have low tunnels, but a good day out. I would place Madeira with it's year round your temperate climate as a place of many things to see but not much to do. Good for a week to 10 day visit and very relaxing. I would also advise taking a hat as it's mainly sunny.

This was a family run hotel, all the staff were really nice and helpful and seemed to care. The photo of the hotel on the Expedia site is dated and there’s been a lot of development since, but the area was still residential and we were not disturbed by noise. Rooms were fine a bit dated I found the bed hard and the pillows poor. There was also a bit of water damage to the breakfast area. There seemed to be a real mix of quests which was nice and the hotel represented great value Thanks to all the staff for their hard work
