Best Areas to Stay in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a land of captivating contrasts, and where you choose to stay will profoundly shape your travel narrative. From the cosmopolitan energy of its capital to the ancient allure of its historical sites and the unique geological wonders, each region offers a distinct atmosphere and set of attractions. Understanding these differences is paramount for Singaporean travellers aiming to craft an itinerary that perfectly aligns with their interests, ensuring a fulfilling and memorable journey through this remarkable country.

Amman

Amman, the capital, pulsates with a modern, yet deeply historical, energy. It’s a city where ancient Roman ruins stand alongside contemporary art galleries and chic cafes. For Singaporean travellers, Amman offers a familiar urban buzz combined with unique Middle Eastern charm. It's an ideal base for those who appreciate a dynamic city environment, enjoy exploring diverse culinary scenes, and want convenient access to shopping and nightlife. Families will find it a good starting point, with plenty of amenities, while solo travellers can navigate its streets with ease.

From Amman, iconic sites like the Citadel and the Roman Theatre are easily accessible, offering a glimpse into the city's rich past. The modern Abdali district provides a taste of contemporary Jordan. The city is also a gateway to further exploration, with day trips possible to Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. For those looking to experience the local flavours, the Rainbow Street area and downtown souks offer a culinary adventure. Amman is well-connected, with Queen Alia International Airport serving as the main entry point.

Petra

The legendary city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers an experience unlike any other. Staying near Petra allows for extended exploration of its magnificent rock-cut architecture, including the iconic Treasury and Monastery. This area is best suited for history enthusiasts, archaeologists, and anyone seeking to witness one of the world's most awe-inspiring ancient wonders. The atmosphere is one of profound historical significance, with the dramatic desert landscape providing a stunning backdrop. It’s a destination that demands time to truly appreciate its scale and beauty.

The primary draw here is, of course, the vast archaeological park of Petra itself. Visitors can spend days wandering through the Siq, admiring the intricate facades, and hiking to viewpoints. Nearby Wadi Musa offers a range of accommodations and dining options. For those interested in experiencing the desert beyond Petra, excursions to Wadi Rum can be arranged from this region. While not as bustling as Amman, the area around Petra provides a focused cultural immersion, allowing travellers to truly connect with Jordan's ancient heritage.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea region offers a unique natural phenomenon and a chance for unparalleled relaxation. Known for its hypersaline waters that allow visitors to float effortlessly, it's a destination focused on wellness and natural wonders. For Singaporean travellers seeking a tranquil escape, this area is perfect. The resorts here provide a serene environment, ideal for couples looking for a romantic retreat or families wanting a unique holiday experience. The therapeutic properties of the mud and water are a major draw for those seeking rejuvenation.

The main attraction is, naturally, the Dead Sea itself, with its buoyant waters and mineral-rich mud. Resorts in the area, such as those in Muhafazat al Balqa', offer direct access to the sea and a host of amenities like spas, pools, and private beaches. Beyond the sea, visitors can explore nearby natural reserves or historical sites like Mount Nebo. The region is accessible from Amman and offers a starkly beautiful landscape, a perfect counterpoint to the historical sites elsewhere in the country. It's a place to unwind and experience a truly unique geographical marvel.

Aqaba

Aqaba, Jordan's only coastal city, sits on the Red Sea and offers a different facet of the country's appeal. It's a hub for water sports, diving, and beach relaxation, providing a refreshing contrast to the desert landscapes and historical ruins. For Singaporean travellers who enjoy marine activities or simply want to relax by the sea, Aqaba is an excellent choice. The city has a laid-back atmosphere, making it suitable for families, couples, and solo travellers looking for a more leisurely pace. The clear waters and vibrant coral reefs are a significant draw.

Aqaba is renowned for its world-class diving and snorkelling opportunities in the Red Sea, with numerous dive sites accessible from the shore or via boat trips. The city itself offers a pleasant promenade, local markets, and a selection of seafood restaurants. It's also a convenient base for exploring the southern desert landscapes, including Wadi Rum. Aqaba is easily reachable by domestic flight from Amman or by road, making it a well-integrated part of a Jordanian itinerary. For those seeking aquatic adventures, this is the place to book attraction.

What to Eat and Where to Find It

The culinary landscape of The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a delightful exploration of Levantine flavours, deeply rooted in tradition yet vibrant with contemporary influences. A cornerstone of Jordanian cuisine is *mansaf*, a celebratory dish featuring lamb cooked in a fermented dried yogurt sauce (*jameed*) and served over rice with flatbread. This rich, savoury dish is a true taste of Jordanian heritage, often prepared for special occasions and family gatherings, offering a profound culinary insight into the country's cultural identity.

For an authentic taste of *mansaf* and other traditional dishes, seeking out local restaurants in Amman's downtown area or exploring the culinary offerings in cities like Irbid is recommended. Many establishments proudly serve this national dish. For Singaporean Muslim travellers, Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country, and finding halal food is generally straightforward. Most restaurants and eateries adhere to halal practices, and certified halal options are widely available, ensuring a comfortable dining experience for all visitors.

Beyond *mansaf*, regional variations add further depth to Jordanian gastronomy. In the north, particularly around Irbid, expect hearty dishes influenced by Palestinian and Syrian culinary traditions, often featuring fresh vegetables and grains. Coastal Aqaba offers a bounty of fresh seafood, prepared with local spices and herbs. The desert regions, while sparser, offer unique Bedouin fare, often cooked slowly over coals, showcasing the resourcefulness and distinct flavours of nomadic life.

When dining in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, understanding local customs can enhance the experience. Meals are often communal, with dishes shared family-style. Tipping is customary, typically around 10% in restaurants if service is not already included. While many Jordanians speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic Arabic phrases like "Shukran" (thank you) is always appreciated. Meal times are generally similar to Singapore, with lunch being the main meal of the day.

While there isn't a Singaporean Embassy in Jordan, the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore can provide consular assistance if needed. It is always advisable for Singaporean travellers to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and other unforeseen events.

Getting to The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and Getting Around

For travellers from Singapore, reaching The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan typically involves a flight, often with a layover in a major hub city. Direct flights from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) are uncommon, with most journeys connecting through destinations like Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul. Airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines are popular choices, with flight durations generally ranging from 12 to 18 hours, depending on the layover. Planning and booking your book flight in advance can secure better fares.

Once in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, intercity travel is relatively straightforward. Buses operated by companies like JETT provide comfortable and affordable connections between major cities such as Amman, Petra, and Aqaba. For those seeking more convenience or travelling on a tighter schedule, domestic flights operate between Amman and Aqaba. Renting a car is also an option for independent exploration, though navigating local roads can be challenging for first-time visitors. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available within cities.

The best time to visit The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from Singapore is generally during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, the weather is pleasant, with mild temperatures ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summer (June to August) can be very hot, especially in desert areas, while winter (December to February) can be cool and occasionally rainy. Visiting during the shoulder seasons can also offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds.

Before departing Singapore, it's essential to prepare a few key items. The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD). While exchange rates fluctuate, it's useful to have an idea of the current SGD to JOD conversion. ATMs are widely available in cities, and credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for affordable data and calls. Essential apps include maps, translation tools, and ride-hailing services.

Visa Requirements for Singaporean Passport Holders

Singaporean passport holders travelling to The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan can typically obtain a visa upon arrival or through an e-visa system, depending on current regulations. The standard tourist visa allows for a stay of up to one month, which is generally sufficient for exploring the country's main attractions. It is always recommended to check the latest visa requirements with the official Jordanian embassy or immigration authorities before your travel dates.

The process for obtaining a visa on arrival is usually straightforward at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) and other major border crossings. You will need a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, a completed visa application form, and potentially proof of onward travel or sufficient funds. The visa fee is subject to change, so it's advisable to have the exact amount in cash or be prepared to pay by card. Travel insurance is highly recommended.

Visa policies can be subject to change, and it is crucial for all Singaporean travellers to verify the most up-to-date information regarding entry requirements. Consulting the official website of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest Jordanian embassy or consulate is the most reliable way to ensure you have the correct documentation and understand any current regulations before you plan your trip or book flight.

I stayed here for 2 days and the owner welcomed us. He is the sweetest and native English. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The surrounding is peace and quiet, but you'll find so much to buy. Restaurant, minimart, etc. I definitely will stay here again if I come to Amman! Recommended.
