The room was very nice and clean upon arrival with all I was expecting from an appartment style hotel. Great location for who's looking to stay on Financial District. + Laundry machines are free of use. I just don't give a 5 stars review because I thought very surprising that even during a trip of 9 nights, the hotel didn't offer any room cleaning. They offered fresh towels but if I wanted to change the sheets, I had to take care of that. + one of the receptionist could definetly use a little more kindness and smiles (all the others were great!)

My room door lock was broken, when I proceeded to tell the booking staff member, Eros, he told me that building management will be up shortly. After 30 mins, I had to go downstairs and find out that the management had left for the day. Building staff and Booking staff have very poor communication because Eros had no idea what I was talking about. The supposed group chat that they have is clearly ineffective. I had to stay in a room with a broken lock and it doesn’t matter if there is a keypad, that room should have a working interior lock. As I explained to Eros as well, I’ve visited multiple establishments where they indeed had an electronic keypad and a functioning interior lock. Eros insured me that I would be moved to another room and never heard from him again regarding the matter. As a guest of your establishment, you made me feel as if my concerns were not the least bit important.

This place is really run down - The A/C was broken in my room, the toilet seat was really dirty and covered in marks, and housekeeping is not included. Its a $100 up-charge each time you need it. I went down to the front desk to ask if I could have some towels (no) toilet paper (yes) and asked the guy if there were some way to get in touch with him other than taking the elevator down (no phone in the room). Spoiler alert - the answer was no. When I looked surprised he just said "yeah, this place doesn't make any sense to me." I felt really bad for him. None of the common areas (like the lobby where he sits at the desk, were air conditioned and it was 90 degrees out. He said "yeah... I got my little fan though" and pointed at a desk fan. Oh, the code to my room would randomly stop working and I would have to take the elevator back down to get a new one. And the lobby smelled bad.

As former New Yorkers we were excited to find 17 John with such beautifully designed rooms with tons of space and kitchen! The room we selected was larger than most studio apartments in the city. We soon discovered the operations and hospitality did not match the talented design firm hired to design their rooms. Entering our room we were taken back by the large chunks of plastic missing from the windows sills. One wall appeared to have been repaired a multitude of times but each time repaired with a different shade of white. Other repairs were just plaster slapped into holes in the wall. The most disappointing was the bathroom, the shower did not have a curtain and as a result water would splash on to the wall and puddle by the door way, the water never seemed to dry up.. this I’m am sure has been happening for a while judging from the decay in the plaster. In regard to service, there was typically one person at the front desk, all of which seemed more akin to a doorman of an office building than a hotel. There was an overall lack of hospitality training and feeling of luxury and service that the online images portray.

I’ve stayed here many times over the last 5 years often for a week or two at a time while the property was under different management. When the AC stopped working and the room temp climbed to 82F I expected some help. While my email communication got quick answers, I spent two sweaty nights (the windows barely open), and no offer to change rooms or otherwise provide relief despite my requests. I’ve made repeated requests to management, but now that I’ve checked out am being ghosted. The problem with these apart hotel places is when something goes wrong it feels like no one is around to help.
