Strikingly looking hotel. Unfortunately on entering reception, we were greeted with a dirty carpet, which carries on into the bar area with lots of stains. Our room was up 2 flights of stairs, which I wasn't aware of when I booked. Therefore, in this heatwave, the room was an oven. There was a desk fan - 'thank goodness'. Pleased with the room, the layout and amenities. Curtains need seeing to, useless and need blackouts! All the staff were pleasant and hard working. Did not expect a buffet breakfast, felt like a Travel Lodge!! We only had breakfast which was okay and ordered sandwiches late one night, which were very nice. Overall, a pleasant stay, the heat didn't help. We thought it was overpriced for what it was.

The Speech House is a lovely historic building in the most magnificent setting in the Forest of Dean. The staff was exceptional, the food was wonderful, parking was easy. The only downside was the size of our room being rather small.

This is a lovely old-fashioned country hotel with a massive charm appeal. We stayed in a room in the cottage which was great with a sitting area as well as comfortable bedroom and bathroom. Everything was in good condition though the age of the building meant some aspects were a little dated and keeping on top of repairs must be difficult - and due to location, the wifi was poor. Breakfast was exceptional - cooked to order and of the highest quality - though the coffee was only filter style from an urn. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recmmend - provided you are not looking for the latest mod-cons

We were in the cottage room 26 .we were the road side .There was nt a prolem as didnt hear the traffic .But the room needed updating .the bedroom was very small with 2 single beds .which probably would have been better with a double .the bathroom was also very small with shower over bath .But saying that it had everything that was needed .we just stayed the one night and only slept in the room .we found the hotel very well run nice staff. The bar lounge and dining rooms in the hotel was lovely .The breakfast was definitly worth it .very nice and plenty .I would stay again but probably would recommend staying in the hotel .

The hotel itself is an impressive building, but it is clearly in need of renovation. We stayed in an outside room (No. 17), which felt quite dated and would benefit from some updating. During our stay, there was an unpleasant sewage smell coming from the bathroom, which was disappointing. The room was also very warm, and adjusting the radiator thermostats didn’t seem to have any effect. As a result, we had to open the window, but this meant dealing with constant noise from the busy road outside, which made it difficult to sleep. On the positive side, there were plenty of parking spaces available, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

The Speech house was our first stop in the UK after arriving from the US. Having never traveled to the UK before everything was new and different! The staff were extremely kind, helpful, gracious, patient and accommodating. We relied on them for information of all kinds and would have struggle mightily if not for them! The food was very good--beautifully presented and delicious. We were graciously upgraded to a larger cottage room which was a tremendous benefit since we stayed for a week. (Thank you Chaz!) The property is beautiful, historic, and interesting. The trails that were accessible directly from the Speech House were a real treat and perfect for us since we did not have a car. Internet and cell service were mostly only available in the Lodge, so we needed to readjust our thinking and adapt our normal routines, which is a good thing. In our room some of usual creature comforts were a little lacking, but being in the forest in such an historic place with wonderful people more than made up for that! We can highly recommend the Speech House, especially to foreign travelers.

Unfortunately we were in the cottage which meant going up & down narrow stairs with suitcase. Nice clean bathroom & staff friendly.

Excellent staff, without exception they were polite, professional and smiled! This is an old building so the room (14) had lovely old beams and views across the forest. Plenty of parking, easy check-in with welcoming receptionist
