Some staff were foreigners and they all speak English which makes communication easier. They were helpful and courteous. The room has everything that we needed. Nice western beds to sleep on.

We vwey much enjoyed experiencing a Japanese ryokan and onsen. Meals were unique and the attention to every single detail was impressive. Lastly, the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, especially Seigo.

My family and I had a wonderful stay at Hoshokaku. We splurged for the room with the private onsen on deck and were so happy we did - it is well worth it to have your own private bath and the views of Takayama are amazing. Hoshokaku is a beautiful ryokan and service was impeccable. We enjoyed our meals in the dining area - which were delicious. The ryokan is up on a hill so it is a bit of a hike up back from old town but definitely manageable. We loved our time at Hoshokaku and would love to return.

This is a nice ryokan with a good staff, welcoming and helpful. The inn is on the simple side, which does not refer to the spare Japanese tradition but to its now being a bit dated. The dining is as one can expect in a ryokan, thus traditional Japanese. The area around is a lovely park above the inn and the old town, touristy but attractive, directly below. The price is what one expects in Japan, thus expensive relative to comparable lodging elsewhere. Takayama is worth visiting, and this inn is a good base.

We stayed here for one night and really enjoyed the onsen and the food. The female onsen has one indoor and 2 outdoor pools, which give us plenty of personal space when having the hot spring. We were lucky that very few people used the onsen during our stay, and sometimes we even had the whole place to me and my daughter! Another highlight is the foot spa located on the roof level. It was nice to sooth your feet in the hot water and look out to the shimmering lights in town at night. We had a package that included dinner and breakfast which were delicious and very filling.

The hotel is traditional which is what we were after, however, it was quite dated. You can tell money has been spent downstairs to bring it up to a better standard, but the bedrooms we had (western twin and japenese twin futon) were small, bathrooms very dated, smelt smoky & the mattresses were lumpy/ springy. The onsen is nice - three baths for women (can’t comment on the men’s) one inside and two outside. Very clean and private located on ground floor. The top floor has a foot spa with nice views. The other top floor onsen facilities you have to rent. However we found the ground floor facilities nice and adequate. The hotel is located 5 mins from the old town & they offer free pick up/ drop off from the station which is great for when you’ve got a lot of luggage. We stayed two nights and that was plenty, for the hotel and the area. Staff very friendly and lovely. We had the breakfast and it was, traditional (not to our tastes but glad we tried it). Would recommend this hotel if you want traditional but be aware it is quite dated.

We loved this hotel. For those who look for the authentic, this is your place. This is an old fashioned and well maintained ryokan; and it certainly looks from another era. 60’s style with a great location. The “Onsen” (hot bath) was great and the food was delicious and unique. We had a room with “futons” and nevertheless our western vertebrae managed a resting sleep on them. There are also rooms with proper beds, but we wanted to try something different. The staff was superb. Expect to have a smell of cold tobacco in some of the rooms. Keep im mind that Japan still allows indoor smoking in some places. This was not a big issues to us and we are both non-smokers.

Great experience at Hoshokaku. Great location and walking distance to the old town. They provide transfer service from the train station and daily morning shuttle bus. The daily meals, housekeeping and service were excellent. Totally enjoyed my time in Takayama,

This place is AMAZING. In addition to the beautiful atmosphere and the gorgace location, we got an OUTSTANDING help from a staff member that made numerous calls to resolve a bus schedule that was changed because of the typhoon and was able to resolve the situation. Food is excellent and is served in a beautiful way. If we go back to Takayama this is the place we'll stay !!!
