Redeem directly at the KIX Tourist Information Center. Just show your passport. The process is very easy, and you'll be given a card to get on and off trains throughout Kansai. We used it to travel easily in Osaka, Nara, Kobe, and Kyoto, although some lines weren't covered by JR. However, all local lines were fully covered.
