Safestay is really good, close to the city center, just a 5-minute walk to Royal Mile Street, 10-15 minutes to Edinburgh Castle, if you like shopping, it's on Princess Street, 10 minutes walk. There is also a free walking tour about 2-2.5 hours, pretty good information about Edinburg, the rooms are clean, there is a bar downstairs, if you can book with breakfast in this bar, but if not include breakfast, there is also a kitchen complete with microwave, stove, cutlery and cooking utensils. Arriving early or returning home after check-out time is easy, just leave it at luggage storage, free, recommended this place.

The manager was very cordial and kind when we checked in. The hostel itself is excellent. No air, but fans that do the trick. We stayed in a four bunk room with two private toilets and showers. It was great. Close to everything and we walked everywhere. The street and sidewalk outside were a little littered. But that did not affect our stay. There was a cafe and small outdoor gathering area perfect for a rest or cocktail!

Older property but well maintained. Check in and out was quick and easy, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was perfect, right in the middle of the city. We stayed in a family room and would absolutely stay here again.

The hostel was walkable to many sites. Only thing I did not like was on the first day I recieved semi clean linen that I had to exchanged. Noise from the bar did not bother me but getting breakfast was a hassle in that I had to go to the front desk and charge it and scan it in front of the buffet scanner. Quite a bit of work for that early in the morning. Could be efficient in the future. Overall hostel staff were exemplary and amicable. Enjoyed quiz night and karaoke night! Will go back again to a&o Edinburgh City hostel when I return to Edinburgh. Thank you for making my 1st visit to Scotland a memorable experience!

The kitchen is barely functional. It needs a lot of work. The wifi was also a challenge- likely due to construction.

The location at the bottom of the street near the Cowgate was ok but I needed to take into account the incline up to the high street. Closeness to station and transport is good. Breakfast adequate for the day’s excursions. Needed to get to bus station and did it in 20mins. At 80 years of age I was proud of myself! There were many senior citizens in the building. My only criticism would be not knowing the layout and procedure for food etc all doable.

The hostel was very hot. The windows only open slightly, which is understandable for safety reasons. However our room overlooked an outdoor bar area. We had to shut the window because of the noise of the bar, but this meant our room became very hot overnight. The mattress and pillow were too firm so it was an uncomfortable night. Main areas of the room looked clean but there was a sickly smell in the bathroom area of our room and some of the furniture looked dirty and difficult to clean. The hostel is in a good central location, but I would not stay there again.

Staff was polite and helpful with directions. Breakfast had no eggs, and the coffee machine was not working well. Also, I wish I did not have to pay for a towel, and the bar downstairs below my room was very noisy, so I did not get much sleep.

There was no elevator and we had to take the luggage up the steep stairs. There was no air conditioner and the windows barely open to let the cold in. The open windows let all the scream and loud talking from the amenities area, you could barely sleep. The toilet and the shower was no divided and everything got wet, moreover the water from the shower did not drained maintaining the water still, not very clean sharing this with strangers. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Hostel was overbooked on the weekend of the marathon - reception staff were amazing at handling the situation and got us somewhere else quickly but still quite stressful for all the family the night before my race.

We had a few issues upon arrival, as the key cards didn’t work and one of the elevators was out of service. However, the staff were extremely helpful and quickly addressed everything. While these issues were inconvenient, they didn’t seem to be within the hostel’s control. The staff really went above and beyond to make up for the inconvenience, which we appreciated. The facilities and amenities were good overall, and the room, while a bit small, was perfectly fine for a hostel—I've definitely stayed in smaller. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. The bar food was also excellent and definitely a highlight of the stay.
