- Itinerary introduction -

Tsurugajo Castle
Tsurugajo Castle can be said to be the landmark of Aizuwakamatsu City, known as an indestructible castle. During the Boshin War (the last civil war in Japanese history starting from the Battle of Toba Fushimi in 1868), the new government army and the old shogunate army fought here for about a month, making Tsurugajo Castle famous as a "fortress that cannot be attacked". The castle tower was renovated in 2011. Compared with the style of the end of the Tokugawa period, the roof was re-laid with red brick tiles. It is the only castle tower with a red brick roof in Japan.
Ouchi-juku
Village, the buildings of the Edo period (equivalent to a post station) are preserved, and the entire street is a precious historical material. In winter, the snow-capped thatched roofs are especially beautiful and attract many tourists. Lunch is Ouchi-juku's famous "Scallion Soba Noodles". Serving soba noodles with scallions instead of chopsticks is a unique and flavorful way to eat.
Ouchi-juku Snow Festival
At Minamiaizu Ouchi-juku, where the dormitory building from the Edo period is preserved, a fantasy snow festival is held with snow lanterns illuminating the village. From the evening of the first day, the "Goshinkataika" (receiving fire from the sacred fire) ceremony is held. Men in loincloths with naked upper bodies and white scarves on their heads will take the Goshinka (sacred fire) from the altar and light up the snow lanterns built in the dormitory one by one. Afterwards, the streets were patrolled sequentially, and the Ouchi-juku Snow Festival is brought to its climax.
