North Sumatra is the ancestral home of the Batak tribe. The word Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups in this region. The terms used include Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Toba, Angkola, and Mandailing; groups associated with different languages and customs (adat). The Toba Batak are traditionally known for their weaving, wood carving, and especially the ornate stone tombs. The area around Lake Toba is home to many interesting villages; setting for ancient dance and theater performances on a modern stage.

10:00-15:30 Upon arrival at KNO airport in Medan, meet your licensed and professional guide, then travel together to Maria Annai Velangkanni Church; a beautiful example of Indo-Mogul architecture brought from Tamil Nadu in India, which contains many charming ornaments and colorful displays within the towering temple. Continue to the forested foothills of the Bukit Barisan mountains, where you will see beautiful views on the way to the cool and beautiful town of Berastagi. Stop at Lau Debuk Debuk - a natural sulfur spring which is a great place to enjoy bathing together in the steaming sulfur water. Next, visit the Golden Pagoda, which is the tallest of its kind in Indonesia and the third largest in the world. Head to Berastagi to visit the city's traditional Fruit Market, where you'll be met with a bustle of color and bustling activity as the locals go about their daily business. We will also stop at Gundaling Hill; a popular tourist destination in the region, as it offers excellent views of the nearby Sibayak and Sinabung volcanoes.
