North Sumatra is the ancestral home of the Batak tribe. The word Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups in this region. The terms used include Karo, Pakpak, Simalungun, Toba, Angkola, and Mandailing; groups associated with different languages and customs (adat). The Toba Batak are traditionally known for their weaving, wood carving, and especially the ornate stone tombs.
