We really enjoyed our first stay at MacDonald Highland. It was instantly a child-friendly atmosphere (we were holidaying with a nearly 3 year old and a 5 month old) and the facilities for them were wonderful. The staff were particularly helpful and the family room set up was great although we had to drop the legs of a single bed down closer to the ground for our toddler as it was a bit too high.
Our only very small criticism was the apparent lack of sockets by the side of the bed for phone charging (this would help when konked out after trying to get two young children to sleep!)
We look forward to visiting again!

Good: great location, good amenities
Poor: sound insulation, very tired rooms, ran out of a lot of stuff at breakfast, probably need another chef as the poor guy was really trying. You have to hang a tag on your door to say you want your room cleaned. We didn’t read that and then missed the room cleaning. Just seems like a way to save money while masking it as being ‘eco-friendly’
This place could be amazing, probably would have been 20 years ago, but it’s really tired now and needs some upgrading

Great place to stay with kids.
The rooms were a bit dated and the carpets could have been cleaner especially around the edges.
The pool was fun and the breakfast was nice!

If you're travelling with kids it will be ideal: there is a soft play, activity room, and pool which are all clean and included. I didn't rate the breakfast, not as good a selection as other hotels and not that tasty. The rooms and communal areas are dated and pretty poor, but fairly clean. The highland hotel has a great veranda which I felt was under utilised by not opening the upstairs bar. For the price I paid it was about right, but it really needs renovating.

The Highland Hotel was very nice. As mentioned by others, it's in need of some love: new curtains, new bedding. However, that didn't change our experience. The restaurants were all nice and had much better food than their individual reviews suggested. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. The rooms don't come with refrigerators but they offer to store anything you need in their main fridge.
Our daughter loved the pool and the playground.

Our room was over looked and the rooms do not have net curtains or similar so there is no privacy. The room cleaning was a bit slap dash we had to ask for clean cups and glasses and the bed was made by just putting pillows back in place and pulling quilt over. There was all these signs telling you to contact house keeping and front desk if you needed anything but no phone in room the phone numbers given 1 was 0 the other nobody answered. The room keys had a specific way of working which nobody bothered to tell us about

The hotel is quite dated for the price. I had one of the cleaning staff be extremely rude to me and he was very unprofessional. He attended my room, I asked him to come back in 5 minutes as we were just getting our things together to leave the room. His response was, “if it doesn’t get done now, it doesn’t get done at all”, and walked off. I had to call him back as we needed fresh towels etc, he came back, rushed around the room, rinsed a dirty glass in the sink and wiped it with a cloth and put it back.
I reported this to a member of staff at check out, I was told that member of staff knew the cleaner I was talking about from my description of him. That member of staff asked if I would like it reported, which I said yes please, I was told that a manager would get back to me. I have never heard from anyone about my complaint, or any action taken with the cleaner.

We traveled with other family, so we had two rooms. Check in was very rough. Once we finally found the correct building and desk, the two people at check-in were quite rude. When we got to the rooms, one of the room was lovely, lots of nice amenities. The other room had no amenities (no shampoo, conditioner, robes, etc); it also had a broken shower. When the desk was called, no one answered. Breakfast was a similar situation; the first morning, they were out of pastries, sourdough bread, potatoes, etc. The second day everything was there, and breakfast was lovely. The kids enjoyed the pool, and we enjoyed some hiking in the Cairngorms. Our checkout was much better than checking in; the gentleman was very friendly and helpful. Downtown Aviemore was quaint with shops, restaurants, and the train station. All were within walking distance. Overall, a very inconsistent, but average stay.

Loved everything about the property . Kids had lovely time at the activities park . Did grass sledging, swimming. Kids loved the yellow slide . The breakfast was delicious. The lock of the bathroom door was not working but this was just a minor thing. Apart from that everything was superb . Thanks for making us feel homely and welcome . Lovely place to stay .

Our check in staff were quite rude, though the young man who checked us out was very nice. We had booked two rooms and one was pretty good, the other had a broken shower and housekeeping failed to leave any amenities. When the desk was called, no one answered. The property is within walking distance to town and hiking in the Cairngorms, which was really nice. Our first morning of breakfast was disappointing as they didn’t have several items ready, but the second morning was good. Overall, very inconsistent.
