State House Inn

I was moved to 4 different rooms because the hotel did not have heat. The final room did not have towels. The quality of the hotel is going down despite hosting dignitaries due to the close proximity of the IL State Capitol building.

There were people hanging out in the lobby for hours. Pretty sure they were homeless or sex workers. The elevator was broken and they had a caution tape because door was stuck open. And when we went down for breakfast the next morning no one showed up to cook - so we didn’t get breakfast or any type of comp for it.

It took three attempts to get the room we booked online (first room hadn't been cleaned yet, second room had two double beds and we booked a single queen). There were water buckets scattered throughout the entryway catching water from a leaky ceiling. One of the two elevators was blocked off with caution tape and didn't work. The room's thermostat didn't work... it was freezing in our room despite turning the temperature up to 90 degrees. We requested additional blankets at 9pm and were told "it will be awhile" before they could accommodate... however nobody ever brought anything. Finally, we were woken up at 8:25am by housekeeping to clean the room when checkout wasn't until 11am. Overall, sadly a very poor experience.

We got there late but overall process was easy good an room wasn't bad

There was loud knocking on one of the rooms door late at night. I thought there was some violence about to or did occur. However, the staff were very nice and helpful. The breakfast could have been better.

I paid for king suite when I checked in they said there was non available but they found one for us. The lady was fairly new so she had manger help they were vey nice .

It seems the place is in a downward transition. There seems never to be a person working the front desk. The breakfast included biscuits and gravy. Something less carb-heavy, maybe yogurt or hard boiled eggs, would have been nice. There is no lobby art--it felt like anything like pictures or posters that might have been there had been removed. The televisions HAD BEEN removed from public spaces, like the breakfast room. The taped, open, lobby door hinted at work being done on the elevator, but that did not change in the time I was there. It seemed as though the building is being stripped down, while still renting out rooms.

Cozy

Looked very out dated. No fridge, no kleenex, no bathroom countertop. We constantly got locked out of our room because the key cards kept quitting. Had to get card fixed 4 or 5 times in a 2 night stay.

My room had :no closet (a clothing rack was brought in); no vanity (only a small sink with no storage); no refrigerator; no phone; no facial tissue. On the plus side, room had a nice view and was clean.

Very kind staff. My only concern was that my room number was said aloud multiple times. Maybe it's not as widely though of as I expected, but that's a safety concern, even more so as a solo traveller. The location and price were great, super walkable.

The hotel is good—it was clean, and the bed was comfortable. It is an older hotel, but considering the price, it is adequate. Breakfast left something to be desired; it was practically non-existent. There was nothing offered for breakfast, just some cereals and a few breads. Another aspect is the service. It's not the worst, but it could be improved.

They gave 2 of the flattest pillows to start and a duvet cover, not even the actual duvet. Breakfast options were dry toast, dry cereal, or an apple. Drink options were all out of order. Rooms thermostat barely worked so we were freezing and the hallways were almost as cold as outside was.

Convenient

Sad to see this once great hotel going downhill from lack of care. Breakfast was a few biscuits and thin gravy. No eggs, bacon, sausage, juice or anything else they used to have. Coffee tasted like it had been cooked for a week.

getting off the elevator on the 4th floor the hallway was nasty - why was there a vacuum just placed in the hallway and then left there for at least 3 hours. The property is tired and needs love. the staff at the check in was not helpful and very slow.
