지난 9월 13일, 영국 Coast to Coast 를 걷기 위해 출발지인 St. Bees의 매너 하우스 호텔(Manor House Hotel)에서 1박했다. 도착해보니 1층에 로비나 리셉션 데스크는 아예 없고 Pup이 있을 뿐이었는데, 말이 호텔이지 규모가 좀 큰 B&B라고 해야 맞을 것 같다. Pup에는 우리가 도착한 오후에 이미 결혼식 전야제인지 피로연인지, 뭔지 모르지만 발 디딜 틈 없이 사람이 들어차서 파티를 벌이고 있었다. 숙박 접수대는 2층으로 오르는 계단 밑에 폭 70cm 정도의 책상이 전부였는데, 주인인 듯 보이는 70세 넘은 남자는 우리보다는 손님 접대에 정신이 없었고, 그 시간 이후 우리는 황당한 일을 여러 차례 당했다. 우리는 몇 가지 서비스를 부탁했는데 말로는 다 하겠다고 했으나 하나도 이루어지지 않았고, 그 중 가장 황당한 것은 다음 목적지의 호텔 예약이었다. 특별한 사정에 의해 다음날 예약을 하지 못해 부탁을 하니, 걱정 말라며 50Pound 짜리 방을 예약한다고 알려줬다. 그날 주소를 받으려고 하니 바빠서 다음날 아침에 주겠다고 해서 믿고 잠을 잤는데, 다음날 아침이 되니 그 방이 예약이 안 돼서 다른 호텔을 예약한다고 한참을 기다리게 한다. 그러더니 75 Pound 짜리 방밖에는 안 된다고 하는 게 아닌가. 사실 그 전날 자기가 바빠서 예약도 안 해놓고 아무렇게나 둘러댄 게 분명하지만 참고, 다음 행선지의 숙소도 매너 하우스 호텔과 같은 값이기에 주소를 받아들고 저녁 7시에 목적지에 도착했다. 그런데 거길 찾아가보니 이게 웬일인가? 그런 예약은 받은 적이 없다는 게 아닌가? 우리가 간 곳은 아주 작은 동네여서 숙박업소가 많지 않다. 하는 수 없이 그 호텔의 안내로 다른 동네에 있는 훨씬 비싼 숙소에 갈 수밖에 없었다. 그간 여행을 꽤 많이 한 편이지만, 이런 황당한 서비스는 받아본 적이 없다. 아무리 가족끼리 운영하는 숙박업소라지만, 전문성으로는 동네 여관이라고 밖에는 말할 수 없겠다. 매너 하우스 호텔 때문에 영국 B&B에 대한 인식을 모두 나쁘게 가질 뻔 했다.

On the whole it was a good place to stay. The room was clean, good facilities, free parking, good free WiFi. convenient location and good breakfast. The inn does very good evening meals as well. We stayed for 2 days.

Room was nice apart from Light switch super glued to the wall and non operational. Towel rail had exposed 240volt connections which in a bathroom is hugely dangerous. Paint peeling from ceiling. Extractor fan was very loud. The tea/coffee selection was good and the bed was comfortable.

Healthy breakfast, suitable for all types.

Excellent views, brilliant for walks and a peaceful break.

Located on main street with large parking and nice garden behind the hotel. Easy access to train and beach some 15 minutes walk away. Well maintained room and newly renovated bathroom. Coffee and tea in room, several breakfast options. Dog friendly place and friendly staff. Clean and a good spot for an overnight stay in the area

Lovely people, great room and the breakfast was amazing.

I stayed in room 6. The room was so cold throughout the night, to get a comfortablesleep i had to get up and put more clothes on. The bathroom was also freezing and the decor was very tired with tiles coming away from the wall. The staff however were very pleasantand and the food was of a good quality.

Extremely cool little town. Walkable to the beach. Excellent roast dinner on Sunday!

Nice comfy room, splendid breakfast.

We enjoyed our stay at the Manor Hotel. It was a lovely place to stay for a couple of nights even though the room was a little small. The food was excellent and had a good choice. Everyone was welcoming.

Very clean and tidy

This room we had was spacious. However the bathroom left a lot to be desired. Black mould from damp on the windows. Tiles falling off in the bath/ shower. No hot water in the shower. Bizarrely to get hot water in the sink you have to turn the tap on the wrong way. 2 of us in the room. 1 bath towel 1 hand towel. But with no hot water it didn’t matter too much.

Great location with ample parking at the rear of the hotel. The breakfast was excellent

Comfortable stay. Good food, though excessive oil poured over salad.
