Here's the full rundown of KK's best beaches, covering everything from the famous sunset spot in town to the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP) and one gorgeous beach just outside the city.

Tanjung Aru is Kota Kinabalu's most iconic beach and consistently ranked among the world's best spots to watch the sun go down. Split into First Beach and Second Beach, it's lined with food stalls, a night market, and shady casuarina trees, making it perfect for an evening stroll after a day of sightseeing. 

Value-add tip: come early to grab a good spot, as it gets busy fast once the sky starts turning orange.

The second-largest island in TARP and the most developed, Manukan has a long sandy beach with shallow, calm water, making it ideal for families and less confident swimmers. It's the top pick for first-timers thanks to its toilets, showers, cafés, and shaded picnic spots. 

One ticket covers entry to all five TARP islands on the same day, so it's easy to island-hop if you've got the time.

Widely considered the most beautiful island in the park, Sapi has clearer water and richer marine life than its neighbours, making it a snorkelling favourite. For a bit of adrenaline, the Coral Flyer zipline connects Sapi to Gaya Island across 250 metres of turquoise sea. 

Watch out for monitor lizards wandering near the picnic tables. They're harmless, just a bit nosy.

It's the best option if you want to combine beach time with a bit of jungle hiking or a proper island staycation.

6. Sulug Island 

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM–5:00 PM daily (charter boat required, no scheduled ferries) 

Admission: Same TARP conservation fee (RM 8/RM 25), plus private charter cost 

The least visited and most untouched island in TARP, Sulug has no toilets or shops, but its long sand spit scattered with seashells is arguably the most pristine beach in the whole park. Since you'll need to charter a private boat to get here. 

It's best suited to travellers who don't mind a bit of extra planning for a properly secluded beach day.

Opening Hours: Open 24 hours; best visited during daylight for full facility access 

Admission: Free public access (resort facilities are for hotel guests) 

About 45 minutes north of the city in Tuaran, Pantai Dalit is a long, quiet stretch of golden sand fronting the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort. It's a lovely alternative if you want a beach without the boat ride. 

Bring your own gear if you're not staying at the resort, as facilities outside hotel grounds are limited.
