Chances are you've already seen Brighton Beach without realising it, that unmistakable row of colourful little huts lining the sand has appeared on Melbourne Airport posters, Instagram feeds, and travel brochures for years. But there's more to this Bayside suburb than a photo backdrop, calm swimming water, a genuinely pretty foreshore, and one of the best sunset views in the city.
Sitting on Port Phillip Bay about 11 kilometres southeast of Melbourne's CBD, Brighton Beach (technically Dendy Street Beach) is one of the more relaxed, family-friendly beaches in the city, and one of its most affluent suburbs to match. Here's everything worth knowing before your visit.
The main event. Around 80 to 90 Victorian-era timber bathing boxes line Dendy Street Beach, each individually painted and privately owned, dating back to the 1860s in various forms. They're not open to the public inside, but walking the full stretch to admire the different designs is the classic Brighton Beach activity.
The bay's calm, sheltered water makes this one of Melbourne's more approachable swimming beaches, well suited to families. Middle Brighton Sea Baths nearby offers a sectioned-off seawater swimming area for those who prefer laps to open water.
Facing west across Port Phillip Bay, Brighton is a genuinely excellent sunset spot, locals often bring a picnic and simply sit on the sand or foreshore lawns as the sky turns orange and pink over the water.
A short pier extending into the bay, popular for a stroll, fishing, and photos looking back at the bathing boxes and Melbourne's distant skyline.
A short walk from the beach, these two shopping strips are lined with cafés, bakeries, and boutiques, ideal for a coffee or meal after your beach time.
Brighton Beach has no gates and no set hours, it's accessible 24 hours a day. Most visitors come during daylight hours, especially in the lead-up to sunset.
Beach Access: Completely free, with no entrance fee anywhere along the beach or foreshore.
Parking: Paid parking is available north of the bathing boxes at the Brighton Beach Lifesaving Club, and south at Green Point, with some additional paid parking along Beach Road outside peak times.
Public toilets and changing facilities are available, generally within or near the lifesaving club building, along with a playground close to the main beach. The bathing boxes themselves have no power or running water and aren't open to visitors, they're privately owned storage and change spaces only.
Brighton Beach sits within the City of Bayside, roughly 11 kilometres southeast of Melbourne's CBD.
The easiest way without a car is the Sandringham line train from Flinders Street Station, a roughly 29-minute ride to Brighton Beach Station, followed by a short walk along the Esplanade to the sand. Bus routes 600, 922, and 923 also stop near the beach. If you're driving, expect around 20 to 25 minutes from the CBD depending on traffic, with paid parking available near the beachfront.
Melbourne's warmer, drier months, roughly October to April, are the best window for a beach visit, with December to February being peak summer. Melbourne's weather can be famously changeable regardless of season, so it's worth checking the forecast and packing a light layer even on a summer visit. Winter (June to August) is noticeably cooler and less suited to swimming, though the foreshore still makes for a scenic walk.
1. Don't expect to go inside a bathing box. They're privately owned, admire them from the outside and save the photos for the exterior.
2. Take the train if you can. Parking near the bathing boxes fills up fast on weekends and over summer.
3. Check the tide and conditions before swimming. Port Phillip Bay is generally calm, but conditions can still shift, so keep an eye on posted signage.
4. Bring layers, even in summer. Melbourne's weather can change quickly through the day, a jacket in your bag is rarely wasted.
5. Combine your visit with Church Street. It's an easy, walkable pairing for lunch or coffee before or after the beach.
Malaysian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) to enter Australia, even though it isn't a traditional visa. It's a straightforward online or app-based application through Australia's official Department of Home Affairs portal, costs AUD 20 (roughly RM 55), and allows stays of up to three months per visit within a 12-month validity period, with multiple entries permitted.
Most applications are approved within minutes to 24 hours, though it's sensible to apply at least a couple of weeks ahead of travel. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your travel date, and only apply through the official government portal to avoid third-party service fees.
One of Melbourne's liveliest beachside suburbs, home to Luna Park, penguin colonies at the pier, and a busy foreshore dining scene, around 20 minutes' drive north.
Federation Square, Flinders Street Station, and the wider CBD are easily reached by train, ideal for combining a beach day with city sightseeing.
A large, well-manicured garden along the Yarra River, a pleasant stop if you want greenery to go with your seaside afternoon.
Further afield but worth the drive for those with extra time, offering wineries, hot springs, and more of Port Phillip Bay's coastline.
