Riverbank Bentota

I stayed 4 nights and Riverbank Bentota and had a wonderful experience there. Although the hotel is slightly difficult to spot from the road, I didn't have trouble finding it. It is a short walk from the Aluthagama train station so great for people who are coming with the train from Colombo. The hotel is lovely and small so perfect for people who don't enjoy the huge crowds of tourists in some of the larger hotels. My room was very spacious and had a lovely high ceiling. It was also clean and comfortable and had a large balcony with a stunning view of the river and the swimming pool in the garden. Perfect for relaxing in the afternoon. The swimming pool is great if you are feeling a bit too lazy to walk to the beach (Bentota beach is a 10 min walk away) or if the waves are too large for swimming that day. The breakfast was delicious - always came with plenty of fresh fruit and enough coffee to last you the day. The hotel owners/staff were lovely and accommodating hosts and I would definitely stay there again.

Really lovely hotel. Friendly owners. Situated right on the river bank where there is plenty to look at. We are looking forward to going back to stay again sometime.

The Riverbank Bentota is an excellent guest house. The rooms are large and comfortable, and the Wi-Fi worked well during our stay. There is a pool, which was most welcomed in the heat. The included breakfast was very good, and the family also fixed us lunch and dinner (at modest additional cost) when the local restaurants were closed due to a holiday. They also gave us complementary rides to the beach (about 1.5 km away) and provided a convenient ride to the airport at the going price. The local area is not as nice, as the guest house is on a busy street, with many shops and a market mostly used by the locals. The large tourist hotels are across the river (about a 15 min walk). There are limited restaurants near the guest house, but we found the Happy Fish Restaurant (next to the bridge across the river) a good choice.

Das Riverbank empfehlen wir ohne zu Zögern weiter. Herrlicher Ausblick auf den Fluss, während man sich im Pool erfrischt. Tolles Frühstück und persönliche Betreuung bei allen Fragen. Danus Mama hat sogar für uns Sri Lankisch gekocht. Tausend Dank!

Wonderful atmosphere and great location by the river. Organise river cruise right from pier from your garden with a pool. Friendly family and lovely dog (silent one).

Entspanntes und kleines Hotel direkt am Fluss. Das kleine und freundlich Familienunternehmen erfüllt wirklich alle Wünsche und hilft wo es nur geht. Das Frühstück war Klasse und wir haben uns gefreut dieses Hotel gewählt zu haben...

Probably one of the nicest places I stayed at while in Sri Lanka, they're within walking distance of the main stree, but set back behind other buildings, thus very quiet. It only takes 4 minutes to walk to one of the towns top bar/restaurant, but where the prices are still reasonable.

Family run B&B, very friendly and will do anything for you. Beautiful, quiet spot that's within walking distance to Bentota Beach.

Excellent place to stay. The owners were friendly and helpful. Just would like to see sheets and pillow cases on the bed. When you stay at a small hotel you support the family man and not a big business. Stay locally.

Das kleine familiengeführte Hotel mit nur 5 Zimmern war die allererste Unterkunft in Sri Lanka. Hier wollten wir einfach nur relaxen, bevor wir knapp 4 Wochen durch's Land reisten. Angenehme Zimmer, ein unaufdringlicher Service, das tolle Frühstück und die Freundlichkeit der Besitzerin und ihrer Mannschaft bescherten uns einen unbeschwerten Start. Besonders angenehm empfanden wir den großen Balkon mit schöner Möblierung und Blick auf den Pool sowie über den Fluss. Herzlichen Dank an dieser Stelle auch noch einmal an den jungen Manager (Sohn der Owner Lady), der uns zur Abreise mit dem Tuktuk kostenlos zur Bushaltestelle bringen ließ. Er spricht im Gegensatz zu seiner Mutter sehr gut Englisch, so dass Kommunikation immer gewährleistet war. Die Läden und Restaurants von Aluthgama sind in wenigen Gehminuten fußläufig erreichbar. Der Strand von Bentota eignet sich in südlicher Richtung bis Induruwa hervorragend für längere Strandspaziergänge. Unterwegs kann man zum Beispiel im cool gestalteten "Awanhala Beach Restaurant" einkehren oder dort einfach nur am Strand im Palmenschatten ein eiskaltes Bier bei Reggae-Music genießen. Unter dem Strich absolut empfehlenswert.

Family run hotel who couldn't do enough for me, making me tea and coffee during the day and never charged me. Clean swimming pool and not overcrowded. Hotel is about a kilometre from Bentota beach. Eat at Pier 88 which is a hundred metres away overlooking the river which is mainly used by tourists or try Ruwan cafe on the way to the beach which is used by the locals. They are all friendly and their curry is tasty and ridiculously cheap. Monday morning is market day 50 metres from the hotel and mainly sells fruit and vegetables, every type you can imagine. Besides the big tourist hotels and places like Pier 88, most places don't sell beer or spirits but there are three liquor stores along the main high street where you can buy cold beer or spirits. Tuck tuks are everywhere if you don't fancy walking in the high humidity. There are numerous touts who will try to get you on every trip going and accompany you into the shops so they get their commission but after a couple of days they usually give up if they see you are not interested. Overall, a friendly place so smile at the locals and enjoy their warmth. Would I go back? Yes definitely !
