Really nice hotel, well placed for our visit to The 1865 music venue.

Reception staff member very clear advising me about the unexpected additional £25 deposit on top of booking fee upon my arrival. Large hotel needs a major refurbishment, carpets are dirty and the smell of the breakfast area on walking through and up to my room made my heart sink, bedroom windows cracked and glass almost falling out, window frame split, bedroom floor not hoovered well, Velux window in disrepair so did not attempt to open to let heat out, low quality mattress should be replaced and for a better quality one, shower rail soap dish was broken, bathroom tatty. Plus points it's location, the bedding was immaculate and fresh smelling and no hairs, Although the receptionist was a bit abrupt, (I did check in late) I could see he was a nice person. It could have been a lot worse and did the job, somewhere to sleep before catching the morning ferry and the saving grace/ surprise was how clean the bedding was and I did get a smile out of the receptionist. A packet of biscuits would help on the bedroom hospitality tray, whilst someone decides how long to hang on running it in the current state or to spend a few million doing it up.

DO NOT STAY HERE! No air conditioning and the staff only provided one lousy fan which did not put out a lot of air. It was so very hot when we stayed there. Another thing that WAS NOT mentioned was the fact that they have NO water pressure. We took showers to just dribbling water at best which did not even get hair wet and was on scorching hot as we could not turn down the temperature. It was awful. I will never recommend this property to anyone and I am shocked that you have it listed on your site. Shame on you. Wasted $$$ on that stay. Horrible property. Horribly kept up. Just awful

Not as advertised! They advertise amenities they don’t have. They told us they would give us a refund when we opted to leave for a clean, safe hotel with the actual amenities we were looking for. 12hrs later we got a message that they were refusing the refund. Basically, they lie to sell rooms and avoid conflict. The room was incredibly hot (we booked a room with AC) and extremely dated. The beds were on an angle and extremely squeaky. The lift was horrendously terrifying but the only option given the narrow, endless stairs. The lift al only hold one person and one bag at a time so good luck at check out! There are cheaper hotels with actual amenities, safe lifts and only a short distance from all the action! Save yourself the hassle and book one of those.

The hotel is located near to shops and restaurants. On arrival we were given a double bedded room instead of the twin we originally booked. Another room was arranged which was clean but very basic. A good breakfast was provided.

The staff were very helpful but the accommodation was underwhelming. In the middle of a heatwave the lack of air conditioning was a disappointment, and while a fan had been provided, the security device on the single openable window meant that it would only open a very small amount which resulted in no air flow or fresh air. Other issues included: - Bizarre built in furniture with plug sockets so close to the desk surface that i couldn't plug in the fan, my laptop or a phone charger. No bedside lights so the choice was either 8 bright ceiling lights or total darkness. To be fair the en-suite was brand new with a good shower. Not really sure why there was a kitchen with hob and sink in the room - but in any event there was a sign saying it was brand new and not yet in use. The bed linen was very cheap and synthetic feeling, so very sweaty and gross on a hot night. The carpet in the dining room, which I had to walk through to access my room, was frankly a health hazard judging by the stains and discolouration. The price of the hotel was reflected in the quality, but for the same price a Travelodge or Premier Inn would probably have been a better bet. The location was very central for a range of dive-bars, hell-holes and stab-vests-must-be-worn pubs in Southampton. The Chinese takeaway down the road did nice chips at 1.00am.

Not many properties have such history and such a friendly staff! It is, being so old, without a/c, and it was hard to sleep with temps above 30. The location is awesome.

Always like staying here. Quiet, comfortable, friendly staff and located right in the heart of things. Excellent value

This hotel is located at an excellent location. Lots of restaurants, cafes and pubs nearby. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We plan on staying there again next time we’re in Southampton.
