I think it depends on when you stay at the Hallows as to how much you will enjoy it. During busy periods I think it would be a good choice - the front part of the building is nicely restored and although things deteriorate a bit as you get into the rear of the building, it's comfortable enough. On our first night there was just us and one other couple staying. On the second night, just us. The building is very large and rambling and there was no one at reception at any stage. The property is on the outskirts of town and feels quite isolated. I certainly wouldn't recommend if you are travelling alone. It's a huge, empty space. It's good value for money though, with the facilities you get.

No one at reception desk at all over the weekend. To find your room you had to follow the arrows upstairs through corridors, through lounge areas. Obviously a place for workers as every second room had dirty work boots in the corridors. Kitchen sink tap handle lifted straight up, not secured and the shower screen was very hard to open and close, we were worried it would break.

No contact checkin. Pouring water from electric jug was a challenge, spout not very good. Otherwise it was clean and comfortable and quiet. Nice place to stay.
