More about hotels in Melbourne CBD

Melbourne CBD is the compact grid at the heart of Victoria's capital — trams rattling down wide boulevards, laneways hiding some of the country's best coffee, and Flinders Street Station anchoring it all. It's Melbourne's most walkable base: everything from the MCG to Queen Victoria Market is a tram ride or a stroll away.

Where to stay in Melbourne CBD

  • Flinders Street & Federation Square: Right by the station, the National Gallery and Fed Square's events calendar — handy for first-timers who want everything on foot.
  • Collins Street & Bourke Street Mall: Melbourne's business and shopping spine, with designer stores up top and trams running its full length.
  • Chinatown & Little Bourke Street: Laneway dumplings, neon signage and late-night eats dating back to the gold rush era.
  • Queen Victoria Market precinct: A quieter northern pocket near the market stalls and State Library, still a short tram from everything else.

Hotel picks in Melbourne CBD

  • Adelphi Hotel — a Flinders Lane favourite with warehouse-style rooms and a rooftop pool overlooking the city; good for couples chasing laneway dining.
  • Jasper Boutique Hotel — steps from Queen Victoria Market, with an in-house art gallery and wellness centre.
  • Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne — self-contained apartments near Bourke Street with kitchen and laundry, suited to longer stays or families.
  • The Village Melbourne – Hostel — social dorms and a downstairs bar near the market, Melbourne's best-known budget pick.
  • Crown Towers Melbourne — five-star riverside towers on the Southbank edge of the CBD, for a big-occasion stay.

What is Melbourne CBD known for?

Melbourne's famous laneways and street art, Chinatown's gold-rush-era history, Flinders Street Station's clocks, Federation Square's exhibitions, and a tram network that makes the whole grid car-free.

Getting around Melbourne CBD

You won't need a car. The free City Circle tram (route 35) and Zone 1 trams cover the whole CBD, and SkyBus runs direct from Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross Station in about 20–25 minutes. Prices swing with the calendar — book ahead if your trip lines up with the Australian Open, AFL finals or the Grand Prix.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Melbourne CBD

How far is Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport?

About 22km. SkyBus runs direct from the airport to Southern Cross Station in the CBD in around 20–25 minutes, so you don't need a rental car just to get into the city.

Do I need a car in Melbourne CBD?

No — the CBD's free City Circle tram and dense Zone 1 tram network cover everything within the grid. A car is more useful if you're planning day trips out to the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula.

What are the best areas to stay within Melbourne CBD?

Flinders Street/Federation Square suits first-time visitors who want everything walkable; Collins Street suits business trips and shopping; Chinatown suits late-night diners; the Queen Victoria Market end is quieter and still a short tram from the centre.

Is Melbourne CBD good for families?

Yes — Melbourne Aquarium, Fed Square's family events and the tram network (kids under 4 travel free) make the CBD an easy base, though families wanting backyard space often prefer a suburb like Docklands or South Yarra instead.

How many days should I spend in Melbourne CBD?

Two to three days covers the laneways, galleries and Queen Victoria Market comfortably, with a day trip to the Yarra Valley or Great Ocean Road tacked on if you have longer.

What's a good day trip from Melbourne CBD?

The Yarra Valley wine region and the Dandenong Ranges are both under an hour's drive; the Great Ocean Road is a full-day trip and easiest with a car or organised tour.

How does the cost of staying in Melbourne CBD compare to Sydney?

Generally a little cheaper than Sydney CBD for equivalent hotel tiers, though prices spike hard around major events like the Australian Open and the Grand Prix.

What's Melbourne CBD known for?

Its laneway culture and coffee scene, Chinatown, Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, and being one of the easiest Australian city centres to get around without a car.

How long is the flight to Melbourne from other Australian capitals?

Roughly 1hr20 from Sydney or Adelaide, 1hr35 from Brisbane, 3hrs from Perth, and about 4hrs from Darwin.

When's the best time to visit Melbourne CBD?

March–May (autumn) and September–November (spring) have the most reliable weather; December–February brings the Australian Open and long, warm evenings, but also the biggest crowds and prices.

The location of the apartment is in CBD, very centrally located to the malls, street malls, restaurants and public transportation - all within short walking distance. Free Trams are a few blocks away. The apartment itself is not that new as interior and furniture are quite outdated, but it is quite homey. If you want to cook a small meal, a small kitchen is available to be used with all tools and utensils, included dishwasher. Washing machine/dryer is in the premise as well included detergent, so you can wash your laundry with no worry. We stayed 10 nights in Sommerset and had received an excellent services from the staff as they were very attentive to all requests made upon. Overall is a-five star apartment that we called home for 10 nights.
