New Holgate

We were expecting something special for the £175 we paid for this “deluxe” double. We were very disappointed to be given a ground floor, small double. This was next to the front door and on the fairly busy road. Disturbed by a drunken hen party knocking on the door as they couldn’t be bothered to find their key. The onsite staff had gone by 5:30 when they’re supposed to be there until 8:00pm. Our room was really hot. We had to ring the emergency number for a fan, the manager living half an hour away arranged for another staff member to come back. He gave us two fans and acknowledged this room was hot. The two fans were on from the moment we got them to us leaving. . Couldn’t have the window open overnight as we were on the ground floor and the windows were bottom opening sash windows. Had to keep the very thick curtains closed, again because we were on the ground floor. We would not have booked a ground floor room had we known and being next to the front door was very noisy. Our room didn’t feature on any of the photos available when booking, no surprise really. The staff were all friendly but it’s poor when there’s no one available from 5:30pm to 6:00 am for the price paid. Needless to say this hotel was a disappointment and overpriced and we would not recommend it.

Room was small but comfortable

A really lovely little hotel. Room was beautiful and a great location to walk into the centre of York. Will 100% be back.

The staff were very friendly, the bathroom facilities in the room were great and most importantly, the bed was very comfortable.

Smooth check in, room was exceptional and property was in close proximity to the centre of York. On site parking available. Only downside was traffic noise quite loud through the night as room was at the front but couldn’t be helped. Would highly recommend and would absolutely stay here again.

The New Holgate is a great little Hotel, handy for walking into York, comfy bed, really nice staff and tasty breakfast. It was great!

Good hotel, modern and clean. The biggest problem was the noise around the room, which was facing a busy road, windows did not isolate the noise and was next to the kitchen, which means lots noise when cooking and cleaning early in the morning. The other issue was the heat, even though it was not that warm outside, the room was very hot, and the window barely opens. Ended up leaving early because we couldn't sleep, unfortunately they did not want to refund the last night.

From the moment we walked through the door to the moment we left The New Holgate was warm, friendly and relaxing. The guy that was on reception was so helpful and showed us to our room. The room was spotless and very inviting. The bathroom clean and everything as it should be. Checking in and out on the email that was sent made it seamless and gave us a little extra time to relax. The hotel is situated far enough from the centre of York to be peaceful but close enough to walk there in approx. 10 mins. The only down side being really picky was the water pressure for both the shower and bath. The shower almost trickled out and the bath took and eternity to fill. That being said it wasn't enough to ruin our stay. We would highly recommend and will certainly be returning.

On arrival the staff were very friendly. The room was clean and WiFi was very good. Would happily stay again

Very disappointed with our stay at The New Holgate Hotel (27 Feb – 1 Mar 2026). My son bought a Saturday night Double Deluxe room as a gift (£149). I phoned to add Friday and was quoted £128 with free parking for my husband’s disability badge. A manager later rang and promised to match the original price. On arrival we were charged £210 for the extra night with an abrupt reception response and no explanation. Total came to ~£350 instead of the expected ~£270. Despite knowing about the disability badge, we were given a top-floor room with stairs only. My husband (post-stroke, heart condition) struggled badly to reach it. The room didn’t match the booking: confirmation stated a bath, but we had only a shower. The hotel felt largely unmanned – on our first night the front door was left wide open, anyone could walk in. Very unsafe. The building is basically an old house tarted up: creaky stairs, constant noise from people coming and going, impossible to sleep. Advertised as “spa-like” but it was just a standard, basic hotel. We were even given a cheap plastic wedge to prop the window open – it felt dangerous and nearly trapped my fingers. At checkout they said the Saturday payment would be taken the next day, even though my son had already paid in full in December. I emailed requesting a breakdown of the £210 charge, confirmation we weren’t double-billed, clarification of the room type, and an explanation for allocating a disabled guest a stairs-only room. No reply still.

Lovely room, helpful staff, nice tea, coffee and biscuits

Our suite was a good size, super clean, comfortable & very stylish with a boutique vibe. The staff were friendly & attentive. Breakfast was very nice quality. A little further to walk in to the centre than we expected & we thought the parking fee was a little expensive which should be free of charge for guests. Apart from that, we couldn’t really fault this hotel & would highly recommend.

We stayed in the double delux room and it didn’t disappoint. The hotel is exceptionally clean and very well presented. There was water, tea and coffee along with juice, fresh towels and fruit available all day. The staff are very friendly and made sure our stay had everything we wanted. Very impressed with this lovely hotel and would definitely stay again. It’s very well situated with a short walk in to the centre.
