More about hotels in Gurney Drive
Where to Stay on Gurney Drive
Gurney Drive is George Town's best-known beachfront strip — a curving coastal road in Penang lined with hotels, malls and, most famously, the Gurney Drive Hawker Centre, one of the island's biggest open-air food courts. It's less a heritage-quarter stay (that's George Town's UNESCO core, a short drive away) and more a comfortable, modern base with the sea on one side and Penang's food scene on the other.
The hawker centre
The Gurney Drive Hawker Centre sits right on the waterfront and has been named among the world's best streets for food by international travel media. Expect char kway teow, oyster omelette (or chien), rojak, satay, Hokkien mee and lok lok skewers from dozens of stalls — it's busier and pricier than hawker stalls elsewhere in Penang, but the range and the seafront setting are the draw.
Where to stay
- G Hotel Gurney (on Gurney Drive itself) — a 5-star, 312-room hotel with the hawker centre practically on its doorstep, Penang's most recognisable modern hotel address.
- Ascott Gurney Penang (Gurney Drive, George Town) — serviced residences with full kitchens and an infinity pool, aimed at longer stays and families who want space to self-cater.
- Wangs Hotel Gurney Drive — a straightforward budget option on the same strip, for travellers who'd rather spend on food than on the room.
What Gurney Drive is known for
Food, first and foremost — it's one of the most concentrated hawker experiences in Penang. Beyond the hawker centre, the strip has Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon malls for shopping, a seafront promenade for an evening walk, and easy access (10-15 minutes by car) to George Town's UNESCO World Heritage core if you want street art and colonial architecture on top of the food.
