I absolutely love old hotels. The rooms are spacious, so vintage, and the old-money vibe is so strong. Every aspect is taken care of, and the old-school feel is what makes it so appealing. 😍

The kids were happy, the room was clean and spacious, and they didn't want to go home. The pool also made the kids want to stay in for a long time, and the private pool was really nice, but only had limited hours. The staff were all friendly, especially the lady who let me try out the private pool even though I forgot to book it. Thank you, sis!! It was really impressive 🫶

I stayed with my family after returning from Umrah. I chose the executive family room, which was very large and perfectly adequate for four adults. For a very affordable price, I managed to secure a large, spacious room. The hotel's location is also strategic, close to Pasar Baru and numerous hawkers. The breakfast was delicious, though not extensive, but perfectly adequate and simple. I'll stay at the Alia Hotel again with my extended family.

The hotel staff is very friendly, and the security is also friendly. The owner is also friendly. With a room rate under 150,000 Rupiah, it's not bad. Check-in was also easy. When you give the key, you'll be given a snack. I once ordered fried rice from the hotel; it was cheap, only 35,000 Rupiah, and the portion was so large that I couldn't finish it. Two bottles of water are provided in the room every day.

More about hotels in Sawah Besar

Discover Sawah Besar: A Dynamic Hub in Indonesia's Capital

Sawah Besar, a district within the bustling metropolis of Jakarta, offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern commerce, making it a compelling destination for international travellers seeking an authentic Indonesian experience. Unlike the more tourist-centric islands, Sawah Besar provides a glimpse into the daily life and economic pulse of Indonesia's capital city. Here, colonial-era architecture stands alongside contemporary shopping centres, and traditional markets buzz with activity, creating a diverse mix of sights, sounds, and smells that define urban Indonesia.

The district itself is a microcosm of Jakarta's diversity, with distinct neighbourhoods each offering a different flavour. From the vibrant commercial energy of Mangga Dua, known for its vast wholesale markets, to the heritage-rich streets of Pasar Baru, a colonial-era commercial centre, and the more residential feel of Kartini, Sawah Besar presents a varied landscape. Understanding these nuances is key to unlocking the district's full potential, as your choice of base will significantly shape your exploration and immersion into the local culture.

For the value-conscious traveller, Sawah Besar presents an attractive proposition. With average hotel prices around USD 4.72 per night, and key areas like Mangga Dua Square and ITC Mangga Dua offering accommodation starting at remarkably low rates, it stands out as an accessible urban destination. This affordability is particularly appealing to travellers from India and many African nations, who often seek destinations that offer rich experiences without an exorbitant price tag, while still providing excellent value for those from the US and Europe.

The accommodation landscape in Sawah Besar reflects this diversity, ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses to well-appointed hotels. Areas like Mangga Dua are synonymous with bustling trade and offer numerous hotel options catering to shoppers and business travellers, while Pasar Baru provides a more traditional setting with hotels that often blend historical character with modern amenities. Exploring these options allows travellers to tailor their stay, whether they are looking for a convenient base for shopping or a comfortable place to rest after a day of cultural exploration. To find the perfect fit for your trip, consider using Traveloka to book hotel options that align with your itinerary and budget.

Sawah Besar appeals to a broad spectrum of international visitors. American travellers might appreciate the urban exploration opportunities and the chance to experience a different facet of Southeast Asian city life. Europeans, with their keen interest in culture and history, will find the colonial remnants and traditional markets particularly engaging. Indian families often seek destinations offering good value, connectivity, and diverse culinary experiences, all of which Sawah Besar can provide. For travellers from African nations, Sawah Besar's position within a major regional hub offers potential for onward travel and a chance to experience a dynamic, developing urban centre.

Best Areas to Stay in Sawah Besar

Sawah Besar, a district within Jakarta, is not a monolithic entity but rather a collection of distinct neighbourhoods, each possessing its own unique character and appeal for international visitors. Choosing where to base yourself within this dynamic area can profoundly influence your overall travel experience, from the ease of accessing attractions to the local atmosphere you'll encounter daily. Understanding these differences is crucial for crafting a memorable stay that aligns with your travel style and interests.

Pasar Baru

Pasar Baru, meaning "New Market," is one of Sawah Besar's most historically significant and culturally rich neighbourhoods. Established during the Dutch colonial era, it retains much of its old-world charm, with grand colonial buildings and a bustling market atmosphere that draws shoppers seeking textiles, traditional crafts, and culinary delights. This area offers a more grounded, authentic urban experience, appealing to European travellers interested in history and culture, as well as Indian families looking for a vibrant, sensory-rich environment.

From Pasar Baru, visitors can easily explore its namesake market, a hub for local commerce and a great place to sample Indonesian street food. The neighbourhood is also a gateway to other parts of Jakarta, with good public transport links. For those looking to delve deeper into local experiences and perhaps find unique souvenirs, this area provides ample opportunities. You can easily book attractions and tours that depart from or pass through this historic district, making it a convenient starting point for exploration.

Kartini

Kartini, situated within Sawah Besar, offers a more contemporary urban feel, often characterized by its mix of commercial establishments and residential areas. It serves as a vital connection point within the district, providing a blend of modern amenities and accessibility. This neighbourhood might appeal to travellers who prefer a slightly less intense pace than the main commercial hubs but still desire convenient access to city services and transport links. It can be a comfortable base for those who appreciate a balance between urban convenience and a more settled atmosphere.

The practical advantages of staying in Kartini include its proximity to key transport routes, facilitating easier movement across Jakarta. While it may not boast the historical depth of Pasar Baru or the shopping frenzy of Mangga Dua, it offers a solid base for exploring. Visitors can find a range of dining options, from local eateries to more modern cafes, catering to diverse tastes. Its accessibility makes it a practical choice for travellers who plan to use public transportation extensively during their visit.

Mangga Dua

Mangga Dua is the undisputed commercial heart of Sawah Besar, renowned globally as a massive hub for wholesale and retail trade, particularly electronics, fashion, and souvenirs. This area is a magnet for bargain hunters and business travellers, offering an electrifying, fast-paced environment. The sheer scale of the shopping complexes, such as Mangga Dua Square and ITC Mangga Dua, is staggering. It's a district that truly embodies Jakarta's dynamic economic spirit and is particularly attractive to Indian and African travellers who often seek value and variety in their shopping experiences.

Staying in Mangga Dua means being at the epicentre of commerce. Beyond the endless shopping opportunities, the area offers a wide array of dining options, from quick bites in food courts to more formal restaurant settings. Its connectivity is excellent, with major roads and public transport links facilitating easy access to other parts of the city. For travellers whose primary goal is to explore Jakarta's renowned shopping scene, Mangga Dua provides an unparalleled and immersive experience, placing them right in the middle of the action.

Sawah Besar (Central District)

The central Sawah Besar area itself, distinct from its named neighbourhoods, often serves as a nexus of activity, blending administrative functions with commercial and residential pockets. It's here that one can find a concentration of services and a general sense of the district's urban rhythm. This area can appeal to a broad range of travellers, including those from the US and Europe, who are looking for a central point from which to explore Jakarta's diverse offerings, without being confined to a single, specialized neighbourhood.

Choosing to stay in the core Sawah Besar area provides a strategic advantage for exploring the wider city. It offers a good mix of accommodation types and dining establishments, catering to various preferences and budgets. Its central location means that many of Jakarta's attractions, business districts, and cultural sites are relatively accessible, either by public transport or a short taxi ride. This makes it a practical choice for first-time visitors who want a well-rounded introduction to the Indonesian capital.

Mangga Dua, while primarily a shopping destination, also hosts numerous food courts and restaurants within its complexes, offering quick and convenient meals, often with a focus on popular Indonesian and Asian dishes. Street food, offering delicious snacks and meals, can be enjoyed for as little as USD 1-3 per person. Mid-range restaurants provide a more comfortable dining experience with full meals typically costing between USD 5-15 per person. Even upscale dining options remain relatively affordable compared to Western standards, with a three-course meal for two at a mid-tier restaurant often falling between USD 20-40. This value is particularly attractive to travellers from India and many African nations.

Navigating dining etiquette in Sawah Besar is generally straightforward. It's customary to use your right hand for eating, especially when dining at more traditional establishments or enjoying street food. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) often left at mid-range to upscale restaurants. Meal times are typically aligned with Western schedules, with lunch around noon and dinner from 7 PM onwards. Being open to trying local specialties and observing how locals dine will enhance your culinary journey.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Sawah Besar

Understanding and respecting local customs is key to a smooth and enjoyable visit to Sawah Besar. While Jakarta is a cosmopolitan city, certain traditional Indonesian values are still prevalent. A general sense of politeness and respect is highly valued; always greet people with a smile and a polite "selamat pagi" (good morning), "selamat siang" (good afternoon), or "selamat malam" (good evening). When visiting religious sites, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Bargaining is common in markets, but always do so respectfully and with a good humour.

When visiting prominent establishments like Hotel Borobudur Jakarta or The Grand Platinum Jakarta, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. While these are international-standard hotels, adhering to general Indonesian politeness, such as not being overly loud or disruptive, is appreciated. Dress codes are usually relaxed in hotel lobbies and restaurants, but modest attire is advisable when moving between areas. Photography is generally permitted, but it's always courteous to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals.

Safety in Sawah Besar is comparable to other major urban centres. While generally safe, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets like Pasar Baru or Mangga Dua. Keep valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets. For transportation, using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is highly recommended, as they offer fixed prices and track your journey, providing a sense of security for travellers from all source markets. These apps are widely available and reliable across Sawah Besar.

In case of emergencies, dial 112 for general assistance. For specific needs, the local police can be reached at 110. While Sawah Besar does not have its own dedicated tourist police, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police provide support. For US citizens, the U.S. Embassy is located in Jakarta; for Europeans, embassies for the UK, Germany, and France are also in the capital; and for Indian citizens, the Indian Embassy is available. It is always advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to carry a local SIM card for easy communication.

Visa Information for Indonesia (Sawah Besar)

For travellers planning to visit Sawah Besar, understanding Indonesia's visa requirements is crucial. U.S. passport holders can typically enter Indonesia visa-free for tourism or business for up to 30 days, with the possibility of extension. European travellers, including those from the UK, Germany, and France, generally benefit from the same visa-free entry policy for short stays. Indian passport holders are also eligible for visa-free entry for tourism purposes for up to 30 days. For travellers from many African nations, such as Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, visa-free entry is often not standard, and a visa on arrival (VOA) or an e-VOA is typically required, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days, which can be extended. It is always recommended to verify the latest regulations for your specific nationality.

The process for obtaining a visa on arrival, where applicable, is usually straightforward. Upon arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), travellers will proceed to the immigration counter designated for VOA. You will need a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, a return or onward ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds. The VOA fee, typically around USD 35, is payable in USD or local currency. For nationalities requiring an e-VOA, the application should ideally be completed online before travel to expedite the arrival process. Ensure all documentation is in order to avoid any delays.

While visa policies are designed to be accessible, regulations can change. It is strongly advised that all international travellers confirm the most current visa requirements for their specific nationality directly with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in their home country, or through Indonesia's official Directorate General of Immigration website, well in advance of booking their flights. This proactive step ensures that you are fully prepared and can proceed with your travel plans to Sawah Besar with confidence, avoiding any last-minute complications at the point of entry.
