My wife and I just had the most wonderful stay at Swiss-Belhotel Jayapura, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. This was my wife’s very first visit to Papua, and from the moment we arrived, the entire team made us feel incredibly welcomed, valued, and at home. What impressed us most was how quickly the staff got to know us by name. In such a short time, it felt less like staying at a hotel and more like being welcomed by family. The breakfast was outstanding, with an incredible variety of options that truly offered something for everyone. Every morning was a treat, and the quality and selection exceeded our expectations. What made our stay even more special was the way the staff handled a last-minute request. I wanted to create a space where I could gather with my family during our visit, and despite the short notice, the team made it happen. They helped create a beautiful and comfortable setting that allowed us to spend meaningful time together, and it became one of the most memorable moments of our trip. It meant so much to us and is something we will never forget. A special thank you to Rio, Yusak, Dinda, Clay, and the many other team members who consistently went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and well taken care of. Your kindness, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality made our stay unforgettable. Bringing my wife to Papua for the first time was a very special experience for me, and your team played a huge part in making it so memorable. Thank you, Swiss-Belhotel Jayapura, for helping create memories that we will cherish for years to come. We will definitely be back and will gladly recommend your hotel to anyone visiting Jayapura. Terima kasih banyak for making us feel so welcomed, known, and cared for.

More about hotels in Papua

Papua: Where Untamed Nature Meets the Spirit of Adventure

Papua, the easternmost province of Indonesia, offers a travel experience unlike any other, beckoning those who seek raw, untamed beauty and profound cultural encounters. Far removed from the well-trodden tourist paths of other Indonesian islands, Papua presents a landscape sculpted by dramatic mountain ranges, pristine coastlines, and dense, ancient rainforests. For international travellers yearning for genuine adventure and a glimpse into a world largely untouched by mass tourism, this region promises an exploration that is both challenging and deeply rewarding, revealing a side of Indonesia that is both wild and wonderfully authentic.

The sheer diversity within Papua itself is a significant draw. From the tranquil shores of Sentani Lake near the provincial capital to the rugged highlands of Wamena and the mineral-rich lands around Timika, each area offers a distinct flavour of adventure and cultural immersion. Whether you are drawn to the coastal communities, the mountainous interior, or the sprawling plains, understanding these regional differences is key to crafting an itinerary that aligns with your interests, whether that be trekking through remote valleys or exploring unique local traditions.

For the global traveller, Papua represents an exceptional value proposition, especially when considering the unique experiences it offers. With accommodation starting from as little as USD 9.37 per night, it provides an accessible entry point into a range of unparalleled natural wonders. This affordability allows travellers from the United States, Europe, and India to extend their stays, delve deeper into the local culture, and undertake more ambitious adventures, making it a compelling destination for those who prioritize authentic experiences over superficial luxury.

The accommodation landscape in Papua, while perhaps not as extensive as in more developed tourist hubs, offers a range of options to suit different needs. Properties like the Horex (Horison Express) Hotel Sentani provide convenient access for those arriving or departing via Sentani International Airport, while the Horison Kotaraja in Abepura offers a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding urban areas. These establishments serve as crucial gateways, allowing visitors to book hotel stays that facilitate their exploration of this remarkable region.

Papua is a destination that resonates with a variety of international travellers. Adventurous spirits from the United States will find ample opportunities for trekking and exploring remote landscapes. European travellers, often keen on cultural immersion and historical context, will be captivated by the indigenous tribes and their ancient traditions. For Indian families, the region offers a unique, off-the-beaten-path adventure, while its relative proximity to some African nations can make it an interesting, albeit less common, travel consideration for those seeking new horizons.

Best Areas to Stay in Papua

Papua is a vast and geographically diverse region, and choosing where to base yourself significantly influences your travel experience. Unlike a single city, Papua encompasses distinct areas, each with its own character, attractions, and accessibility. For international visitors, understanding these nuances is crucial for selecting accommodation that aligns with their travel style, whether they prioritize proximity to natural wonders, cultural hubs, or transportation links like Sentani International Airport (DJJ) or Wamena Airport (WMX).

Sentani

Sentani, located near the provincial capital of Jayapura, serves as a primary gateway to Papua, largely due to the presence of Sentani International Airport (DJJ). This area offers a blend of natural beauty, particularly around the expansive Lake Sentani, and developing urban amenities. For travellers arriving from afar, Sentani provides a convenient and relatively accessible introduction to the Papuan landscape, offering a calmer pace than the bustling city centre while still providing essential services and accommodation options.

From Sentani, visitors can easily explore the lake's islands, visit traditional villages, and engage with local art. The proximity to the airport makes it ideal for those with early morning departures or late-night arrivals. Getting to Sentani from the airport is a short taxi or ride-sharing service journey. For those looking to explore beyond the immediate vicinity, Sentani serves as a good starting point to book attractions that showcase the region's unique natural and cultural heritage.

Abepura

Abepura, a district within the city of Jayapura, presents a more urban and commercial atmosphere compared to Sentani. It is a hub for local life, offering a glimpse into the daily routines of Papuan residents. For international travellers, Abepura provides a base from which to explore the wider Jayapura area, including markets, government buildings, and educational institutions. Its accessibility and range of amenities make it a practical choice for those who wish to be closer to the pulse of the city. Use Traveloka to book your hotel — book hotel.

This area is well-connected to other parts of Jayapura and is a good starting point for exploring local culinary scenes and markets. While not directly on the coast, it offers access to inland attractions and is a convenient location for business travellers or those on shorter stays. Transportation within Abepura and to other parts of Jayapura is readily available through local taxis and ride-sharing services, making it easy to navigate and discover the local environment. Use Traveloka to book attractions — book attractions.

Timika

Timika, located in the Mimika Regency, is a significant economic centre in Papua, largely driven by its proximity to major mining operations. This gives the area a distinct character, with a more modern infrastructure and a diverse population drawn from various parts of Indonesia and beyond. For international visitors, Timika offers a different perspective on Papua, one that blends industrial activity with access to unique natural environments, including the nearby Lorentz National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Timika serves as a crucial transit point for those wishing to explore the vast Lorentz National Park or engage in adventure tourism in the surrounding highlands. The town itself has a range of hotels and amenities catering to both business and leisure travellers. Access to Timika is typically via its own airport, making it a destination that requires a separate flight from major hubs like Jayapura. From Timika, it's possible to arrange guided tours and expeditions into the wilderness.

Merauke City Center

Merauke City Center, the heart of Merauke Regency, is situated in the southeastern part of Papua, bordering Papua New Guinea. This area holds significant historical importance, particularly related to World War II, and offers a unique cultural landscape influenced by its border location and indigenous communities. For international travellers, Merauke provides an opportunity to explore a less-visited part of Papua, experiencing its distinct history, natural beauty, and the traditions of its people.

Merauke is known for its expansive savannah landscapes and its role as a gateway to the Wasur National Park, often referred to as the "Serengeti of Papua." The city center itself offers a range of accommodations and services. Visitors can explore historical sites, learn about local customs, and experience the unique flora and fauna of the region. Travel to Merauke is typically by air, with flights connecting it to other major Papuan cities and Indonesian hubs.

Sawaerma

Sawaerma, located in the Asmat region, represents a more remote and culturally immersive experience within Papua. This area is renowned for its indigenous Asmat people, famous for their intricate wood carvings and unique cultural practices. For travellers seeking an authentic encounter with traditional Papuan life, Sawaerma offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness ancient customs and art forms firsthand, far from the more developed urban centres.

Visiting Sawaerma is an adventure in itself, requiring careful planning and often organized tours to navigate the logistical challenges of reaching this remote location. The experience here is focused on cultural exchange, understanding the deep connection the Asmat people have with their environment, and appreciating their rich artistic heritage. Accommodation options are typically simpler, reflecting the remote nature of the destination, and are best arranged through specialized tour operators.

South Jayapura

South Jayapura, a district within the provincial capital, offers a mix of residential areas and developing commercial zones. It provides a slightly more relaxed atmosphere compared to the central business districts, while still maintaining good connectivity to key amenities and transportation networks. For international visitors, this area can offer a more local feel, allowing for a deeper understanding of everyday life in Jayapura beyond the main tourist attractions.

This district is a good base for exploring the southern parts of Jayapura and offers access to various local eateries and shops. Its residential character means it can be a quieter option for accommodation, yet it remains well-served by local transport, making it easy to reach other parts of the city. Proximity to certain natural landscapes or cultural sites might also be a draw for travellers seeking a blend of urban convenience and regional exploration.

North Jayapura

North Jayapura, encompassing the central business district and coastal areas of the provincial capital, is the most developed and bustling part of Jayapura. It is home to major hotels, shopping centres, government offices, and the main harbour. For international travellers, this area provides the most comprehensive access to services, dining, and entertainment, making it a convenient choice for those who prefer to be in the heart of the city's activity.

This district is ideal for travellers who want to be close to amenities, business centres, and transport links. It offers a wide array of dining options, from local warungs to more established restaurants, and serves as a hub for exploring the city's cultural and historical sites. Public transport and taxis are abundant, facilitating easy movement around the city and to nearby attractions, including those accessible from Sentani International Airport (DJJ).

Biak Kota

Biak Kota, the main urban centre on Biak Island, serves as a significant historical and cultural point in Papua, with a rich past tied to World War II and its strategic importance. For international travellers, Biak offers a unique blend of historical exploration, natural beauty with its coral reefs and beaches, and a distinct island culture. It provides a different facet of Papua, away from the mainland's mountainous terrain.

Biak Kota is a good base for exploring the island's historical sites, such as Japanese caves and war memorials, as well as its natural attractions like the Bosnik beach and coral gardens. The town has essential services, including hotels and restaurants, catering to visitors. Access to Biak is primarily by air, with flights connecting it to major Indonesian cities, making it a destination that requires a specific travel plan to reach.

Mimika Baru

Mimika Baru is a district within Timika, often serving as the primary entry point and commercial hub for the wider Mimika Regency. It is characterized by its connection to the region's economic activities, particularly mining, and offers a functional base for travellers. For international visitors, Mimika Baru provides essential services, accommodation, and transport links, serving as a practical starting point for exploring the natural wonders and cultural richness of the Mimika area.

This district is home to Timika's airport and a range of hotels and amenities catering to a diverse population. What to Eat and Where to Find It in Papua

Papua's culinary landscape is as diverse and unique as its geography, offering a distinct departure from the flavours found elsewhere in Indonesia. Central to its cuisine are fresh, locally sourced ingredients, often prepared with simple yet flavourful techniques that highlight the natural taste of the produce. Staples like sago, a starchy flour derived from the sago palm, form the basis of many traditional dishes, often served with grilled fish or various jungle vegetables. For the adventurous palate, exploring these indigenous flavours is a key part of the Papuan experience.

When seeking authentic Papuan cuisine, venturing into local markets and smaller eateries, known as 'warungs', is highly recommended. Areas like Sentani and the outskirts of Jayapura offer numerous opportunities to sample local delicacies. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is generally straightforward in larger towns and cities, as Indonesian cuisine predominantly adheres to Halal practices. However, it's always advisable to confirm with the establishment if you have specific dietary requirements, especially when trying less common dishes.

The cost of dining in Papua offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local warungs can provide a hearty meal for as little as USD 2-5. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 5-15 per person for a full meal, while more upscale dining experiences, often found in larger hotels, might range from USD 15-30. These prices are generally lower than what travellers from the US or Europe might expect, making it feasible to enjoy a variety of culinary experiences.

Understanding local dining customs can enhance your experience. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to accept food offered by hosts. While tipping is not mandatory in most local eateries, it is appreciated in higher-end restaurants, typically around 10% of the bill. Be open to trying new things, and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations. Many Papuan dishes are best enjoyed with rice or sago, and spicy sambals are common accompaniments, so be prepared for a flavourful journey.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Papua

Respecting local customs is paramount when visiting Papua, a region with rich and diverse indigenous cultures. While generally welcoming, visitors should be mindful of certain social norms. It is customary to dress modestly, especially when visiting villages or religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. When interacting with elders or community leaders, showing deference is appreciated. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, and be aware that some areas may have specific cultural protocols.

Navigating transportation hubs like Sentani International Airport (DJJ) and Wamena Airport (WMX) requires a basic understanding of local practices. Queuing is not always strictly observed, so patience is key. Photography is generally permitted in public areas, but it's wise to avoid taking pictures of sensitive government buildings or military installations. Dress codes at airports are usually casual, but maintaining a respectful appearance is always advisable, particularly for international travellers.

Papua is generally safe for tourists, but like any destination, it's wise to take precautions. Valuables should be kept secure, and it's advisable to use reputable transportation services. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available in major cities like Jayapura, offering a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. For navigation, offline map applications can be invaluable, especially in areas with limited mobile data coverage. Staying aware of your surroundings is always recommended.

In case of emergencies, local police and ambulance services are available. For US citizens, the US Embassy in Jakarta is the primary point of contact; European travellers can seek assistance from their respective embassies in Jakarta (e.g., UK, Germany, France, Netherlands). Similarly, Indian citizens can contact the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, and travellers from Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and other African nations should consult their embassies in Indonesia. Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for medical emergencies and unforeseen events.

Getting to Papua and Getting Around

Reaching Papua from key international markets involves multiple flights, typically connecting through major Indonesian hubs like Jakarta or Denpasar. For travellers from the United States (e.g., from JFK, LAX), the journey can take 24-36 hours, often with two or more stops. European travellers (e.g., from LHR, FRA, AMS) will face similar transit times. Indian travellers (e.g., from BOM, DEL) will also find connections through Jakarta or other Asian cities, with journeys often exceeding 20 hours.

African travellers (e.g., from NBO, LOS, JNB) will likely require multiple connections, potentially through the Middle East and then Indonesia, making it a significant travel undertaking. The primary gateway to Papua is Sentani International Airport (DJJ) near Jayapura, with other regional airports like Wamena Airport (WMX) serving domestic routes. Booking a flight well in advance is crucial for securing better fares and availability.

Once in Papua, getting around its various regions requires understanding the available transport options. In larger cities like Jayapura, local taxis and ride-sharing services such as Grab are common and offer a convenient way to travel between neighbourhoods like Sentani, Abepura, and North Jayapura. For inter-city travel within Papua, domestic flights are often the most practical, albeit more expensive, option. For shorter distances or within towns, motorcycle taxis ('ojek') are also prevalent. Public buses ('angkot') operate on fixed routes within cities and can be a very budget-friendly way to travel, though they may be crowded and less direct for tourists.

The best time to visit Papua is generally during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more favourable for outdoor activities, trekking, and exploring the natural landscapes, with less rainfall and humidity. While this period might see slightly higher hotel prices and more visitors, it offers the most comfortable conditions for experiencing Papua's adventure offerings. Outside of this window, the wet season can bring heavier rains, which may impact travel plans and accessibility to certain remote areas.

Before departing for Papua, ensure you have essential travel documents, including a valid passport and any necessary visas. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), but carrying some USD for exchange or emergencies is advisable. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport or in major towns is recommended for staying connected. Essential apps include offline maps (like Maps.me), translation apps, and ride-hailing applications if available in your chosen areas. Familiarize yourself with basic Indonesian phrases, as English is not widely spoken outside of tourist-oriented establishments. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

Visa Information

For travellers planning to visit Papua, the entry requirements are governed by Indonesia's visa policies. US passport holders are typically eligible for a visa-free entry for short stays (usually up to 30 days), or they can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA) which can often be extended. European passport holders from countries like the UK, Germany, and France generally benefit from similar visa-free or VOA arrangements for tourism purposes.

Indian passport holders may find the requirements slightly more stringent, often requiring a pre-arranged visa or a VOA, with specific durations and conditions to verify. For travellers from African nations such as Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, visa requirements can vary significantly; many will require a visa obtained in advance from an Indonesian embassy or consulate, though some may qualify for a VOA, making pre-travel verification essential. cheap hotels
