About Darwin

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory of Australia located in the Timor Sea. It is the largest city in the Northern Region with a population of 145,916. It also shares ground with Australia's Darwin-based Air Force. Darwin International Airport has three terminals, which are the international terminal, domestic terminal and cargo terminal. A new terminal was officially opened at Darwin International Airport on May 9, 2015. 1. WWII Oil Storage Tunnels - This oil storage tunnel was built during World War II to protect oils stored in Darwin from Japanese bombings. This tunnel is located beneath the cliffs of Darwin. After the oil tunnel was built, it was never used to store oil. Tunnels 5 and 6 are now open for people to visit. In 1942, 11 oil storage tanks were built on the ground at Stokes Hill. However, on February 19, March 16 and June 16, 1942, air strikes from Japan had destroyed 7 of the 11 tanks there. Following this, the Co-operative Council was directed by the War Cabinet to build a tunnel for storing oil. Six storage tunnels were completed in 1945. However, at that time, peace declarations were made.


2. Mindil Beach - It is a beach located near Darwin's business district. Mindil Beach has a famous market that runs during the dry season only, from May to October. This market is popular among locals and tourists. The Sunset Market on Mindil Beach is a seasonal open market. Now, the Mindil Market consists of 60 food outlets and 130 handicraft shops that are flooded by visitors.


3. Darwin Military Museum - Established as an artillery museum by the Australian Royal Artillery Association to display pictures and artefacts during World War II in Darwin. Today, the museum has exhibits large warfare items including Navy, Army and Air Force items from Australia, US and other armed forces. In 1943, there were more than 110,000 troop personnel based in Darwin.
