Labuan Bajo is a small harbour town on the far western tip of Flores, in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province. Not long ago it was a quiet fishing settlement. Today it is the launch point for boat trips into Komodo National Park, home of the Komodo dragon, pink-sand beaches and some of the richest dive sites in Southeast Asia. Most visitors arrive by air, and booking flights to Labuan Bajo is by far the simplest way to reach this corner of Indonesia from Malaysia.
Komodo International Airport (LBJ) sits on the eastern edge of Labuan Bajo, only a few minutes from the town centre. The waterfront, the main harbour and the strip of cafes and dive shops along the main road are a short drive away, so you can land in the morning and be on a boat the same afternoon if your tour allows it.
The airport has a compact, modern passenger terminal. It was rebuilt and expanded as Labuan Bajo became a national tourism priority, and it has the basic services you need: baggage belts, a few food outlets and counters for local transport. Keep your e-ticket and any tour booking handy, as some operators meet guests right outside arrivals.
Taxis and hotel pick-ups are the usual way into Labuan Bajo, and many dive centres and boat operators include an airport transfer. Ride-hailing coverage exists but can be patchy, so it is worth arranging a pick-up in advance if you land late. Motorbike rental is common in town for exploring nearby waterfalls and viewpoints.
Non-stop flights from Kuala Lumpur to Labuan Bajo come and go with airline schedules, so tick the direct-flight filter to see whether one is on sale for your dates. When there is one, a short Komodo trip from Malaysia becomes much easier. On other days the usual routing is one change in Bali or Jakarta. Bali is the favourite, because the final hop over the islands is short and the connection can double as a stopover.
If you want to combine Labuan Bajo with Bali or Lombok, book separate one-way flights so each leg fits your plan. Leave a comfortable gap between connecting flights on separate tickets, because the final legs into Komodo Airport are sensitive to weather and schedule changes. Easy Reschedule helps if a boat trip or dive plan shifts.
The dry season, roughly April to October, brings calm seas, clear skies and the golden savannah hills that make Padar Island so photogenic. This is the peak time for liveaboard boats, and it overlaps with the Malaysian school holidays around the middle of the year, so flights and cabins fill early. From about November to March the wet season turns the hills green; showers are often brief, but seas can be rougher and some boats run fewer trips.
For Malaysian travellers, demand also rises around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and the year-end school break. Scroll down to the fare-by-month chart to see which months have tended to be calmer for fares to Labuan Bajo, then let a Price Alert do the watching for your dates.
These two islands are where most visitors see Komodo dragons in the wild, on guided walks with park rangers. Treks range from short loops to longer hikes across dry hills, with deer, wild buffalo and seabirds along the way.
A steep climb on Padar rewards you with the famous view over three curved bays, each with different coloured sand. Boats aim to arrive at sunrise or late afternoon when the light is soft and the heat is gentler.
Tiny red fragments from marine organisms mixed into the white sand give this beach its rosy tint. The water is calm and clear, making it a favourite stop for snorkelling during a day trip.
The currents around Komodo National Park bring manta rays, reef sharks and turtles. Dive shops in Labuan Bajo run day trips and multi-day liveaboards for every level, from first-timers to experienced divers.
Close to town, this limestone cave gets its name from the way sunlight reflects off the rock at certain times of day. It is an easy half-day outing if you have time before or after a boat trip.
Most visitors base themselves along the main road and waterfront in the town centre, where cafes, dive shops and harbour access are all within walking distance. The hillside above town has quieter stays with sunset views over the bay. Pede Beach and the coast south of town suit travellers who want more space and a slower pace. Another option is to sleep on a liveaboard boat, or on one of the small islands offshore, for a night or two inside the park itself.
Fresh grilled fish is the evening favourite. Stalls near the waterfront lay out the day's catch, and you choose the fish before it goes on the grill with sambal and lime.
This smoked meat from East Nusa Tenggara is sliced thin and served with rice and a sharp chilli condiment. It is worth trying at local warung around town.
A Manggarai dish of rice cooked inside bamboo over an open fire, kolo has a smoky flavour and is often served at gatherings in the Flores highlands.
The highlands of Flores grow excellent arabica. Cafes in Labuan Bajo serve single-origin brews from Manggarai and Bajawa, and beans make a good souvenir.
Boat and dive dates fill up long before the flights do in the dry season. Lock in your liveaboard first, then book flights to Labuan Bajo on Traveloka around it, knowing 24/7 customer service is there if the weather forces a change.
