Sapporo Okadama Airport is the second, much smaller airport of Hokkaido's capital. It sits inside the city limits, north of the centre, which makes it one of the most convenient landing points in Japan for anyone already travelling around the north. Okadama handles a small number of short domestic routes, mostly within Hokkaido, flown by smaller aircraft. If you are hopping in from a remote island or a coastal town and want to be in central Sapporo quickly, a flight to Sapporo Okadama Airport is often the easiest option.
Okadama lies in Higashi-ku, the eastern ward of Sapporo, on the flat land north of the city centre. Unlike New Chitose, which is out beyond the city boundary to the south-east, Okadama is surrounded by residential streets. That urban setting is its main advantage, and it is also why the runway is short and the aircraft are small.
There is a single, compact passenger terminal with check-in counters, a small waiting area and a few places to buy snacks and souvenirs. Walking from the aircraft to the kerb takes very little time, and queues are rarely a concern. Facilities are basic compared with the city's main airport, so do any serious shopping in town.
Local buses connect the terminal with central Sapporo and with nearby subway stations, where you can switch to the city's underground lines. Taxis wait outside for arrivals and are a practical choice with heavy winter luggage or ski gear. Check the latest bus timetable before you land, as services are timed around the modest flight schedule.
Okadama is a domestic, regional airport, so there are no international arrivals. Travellers from Malaysia usually fly into New Chitose, Sapporo's main gateway, and only use Okadama later for a short hop inside Hokkaido or back from one. Use the direct-flight filter on Traveloka to see the non-stop regional routes into OKD, then compare them with options into New Chitose, which has far more connections. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur or Penang, start your search at New Chitose; if you are already in Hokkaido, Okadama can save you the longer ride from the south-east.
Seats on these small aircraft are limited and baggage rules can be tighter than on jet routes, so check your allowance before packing skis or large suitcases. Book early around busy periods, when regional seats go first.
Sapporo has four clear seasons. Winter is long and snowy, roughly from December to March, and brings the famous Sapporo Snow Festival in early February along with skiing in the nearby mountains. Spring arrives late, with cherry blossoms often appearing in early May. Summer is mild and comfortable, a welcome break from tropical heat, and autumn colours peak around October.
For Malaysian travellers, demand rises during the school holidays, over Chinese New Year and around the year-end break when many want to see snow. Hari Raya and Deepavali long weekends can also push up interest. Winter weather occasionally delays small regional aircraft, so leave some slack in your plans. Use the fare charts on this page to spot which weeks tend to be calmer.
Designed by sculptor Isamu Noguchi on the site of a former landfill, Moerenuma Park is also in the north-east of the city, not far from Okadama. Its huge glass pyramid, geometric hills and open lawns make a striking outing in summer, and in winter the slopes become a spot for sledging.
Odori Park runs east to west through the heart of Sapporo like a long green ribbon. It is the main venue of the Snow Festival, hosts beer gardens in summer and is anchored at one end by the Sapporo TV Tower, whose observation deck gives a clear view along the park.
A ropeway and a small cable car climb Mount Moiwa on the south-west side of the city. The view at dusk, as the grid of streets lights up below, is one of the best-loved night views in Japan.
Set among tall trees near Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Shrine is a peaceful place for a morning walk. The park around it is a favourite cherry blossom spot in spring and is next to the city zoo.
The canal town of Otaru is an easy train ride from central Sapporo. Its restored warehouses, glass workshops, music box shops and seafood markets make it a popular day trip at any time of year.
Most visitors base themselves around Sapporo Station, where trains, buses and underground shopping streets meet. The Odori area is just south, close to the park and department stores. Susukino, further south again, is the nightlife and dining district, busy late into the evening. For something quieter, the area around Nakajima Park offers leafy streets with good subway access. If you have an early departure from Okadama, staying in the eastern part of the city shortens the trip to the terminal.
Sapporo is the home of miso ramen: a rich, savoury broth with thick curly noodles, often topped with butter and sweetcorn. Ramen Alley in Susukino is lined with tiny counters serving it.
A local invention, soup curry is a thin, spicy broth full of large pieces of vegetables and meat, served with rice on the side. You can usually choose your spice level, and Muslim travellers will find some shops offering halal versions.
Named after Genghis Khan, this dish of lamb and vegetables grilled on a dome-shaped skillet is a Sapporo favourite, ideally enjoyed with friends around a table grill.
Hokkaido's cold waters produce excellent seafood. A kaisendon bowl piled with salmon roe, sea urchin, crab and scallops over rice is the classic breakfast at Nijo Market or the Central Wholesale Market.
Okadama is small, but it keeps Sapporo within easy reach of the rest of Hokkaido. Compare regional routes, set a Price Alert for your dates and keep your e-ticket on the Traveloka app, with Easy Reschedule and 24/7 customer service if your plans change.
