LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the New York airport nearest to Manhattan, set on the northern shore of Queens facing Flushing Bay. It is built mainly for flights within the United States and Canada, so travellers from Malaysia usually reach it on the final leg of a longer journey, after connecting in another North American city. Its big advantage is location: Midtown and Upper Manhattan are a short ride away. If your trip includes a stop elsewhere in the US first, compare flights to LaGuardia on Traveloka alongside the other New York airports.
LaGuardia sits in northern Queens, between the neighbourhoods of East Elmhurst and Astoria. The Grand Central Parkway and the bridges across the East River link it to Manhattan and the Bronx. Among the three main airports serving New York, it is the closest to the city centre.
The airport was rebuilt in recent times, with two large modern terminals, B and C, replacing older buildings. The historic Marine Air Terminal, known as Terminal A, still operates on the western side. Check your terminal on the e-ticket before you land, because the terminals are not all connected airside.
LaGuardia has no rail link of its own. The LaGuardia Link bus runs to the subway at Jackson Heights and to the Long Island Rail Road at Woodside, while a Select Bus Service route crosses the Triborough Bridge into Harlem and Upper Manhattan. Yellow taxis and ride-hailing pick-up areas serve every terminal, and at quiet times a car is often the quickest way to Midtown.
Long-haul flights do not normally use LaGuardia, which operates under limits on how far non-stop flights can travel. From Malaysia, an itinerary to LGA therefore combines an international flight to a gateway in North America with a domestic or cross-border leg into New York. On Traveloka, search for LaGuardia and compare the connecting options, then check whether you need to collect bags and clear immigration at the first US airport before the onward flight. If you would rather land in New York on your international flight, compare flights to JFK or Newark, or search the whole New York City area at once.
LaGuardia's short runways by the water are sensitive to weather, and thunderstorms in summer or snow in winter can quickly cause delays. For connecting travellers, that means leaving generous time at the first US airport, especially from December to March and on stormy summer evenings. Spring and autumn usually bring the calmest travel days and the most pleasant weather in the city.
From Malaysia, the busiest booking periods are the school holidays, Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and the end of the year. Within the United States, the Thanksgiving weekend and the Christmas holidays make domestic flights into LaGuardia especially full. Book early for these weeks and follow fare changes with Price Alert.
Just west of the airport, Astoria is a lively Queens neighbourhood with a riverside park under the Hell Gate Bridge and the Museum of the Moving Image, dedicated to film and television.
Across the river in Upper Manhattan, Harlem is famous for its music, churches and brownstone streets. The Apollo Theater on 125th Street has launched countless careers in jazz, soul and hip hop.
This aerial cable car glides over the East River from Manhattan's Upper East Side to Roosevelt Island, giving memorable views of the skyline and the Queensboro Bridge at a relaxed pace.
Two of the city's great green attractions sit side by side in the Bronx. The zoo is one of the largest urban zoos in the country, and the garden's glasshouse and seasonal shows draw visitors all year.
Watching a baseball game in the Bronx is a quintessential New York experience, even for first-timers who are still learning the rules.
Astoria and Jackson Heights in Queens are close to LaGuardia, well served by the subway and full of good-value restaurants. The Upper East Side is a quick drive across the river and puts you beside the museums along Fifth Avenue. Harlem, reachable by the direct bus from the airport, offers characterful streets and a strong local culture. Midtown East is a practical choice for business trips and first-time sightseeing alike.
Astoria has long been home to a Greek community, and its tavernas serve grilled fish, souvlaki, fresh salads and honey-soaked pastries.
In Jackson Heights and Corona, bakeries and street vendors sell warm corn arepas stuffed with cheese, alongside empanadas and fruit juices.
Harlem's soul food kitchens are known for fried chicken, cornbread, collard greens and macaroni cheese, served in generous portions.
The Bronx's Little Italy around Arthur Avenue has bakeries, delis and old-school restaurants serving fresh pasta, cannoli and crusty bread.
If your journey to New York includes a connection in North America, LaGuardia can put you closest to the city. Compare flights to LaGuardia on Traveloka and pick the routing that suits you.
