Songshan is the airport that sits almost inside downtown Taipei, surrounded by apartment blocks and a short metro ride from the busiest shopping streets. It is not the gateway most Malaysian travellers land at, but it matters if your trip includes a domestic hop within Taiwan or a short sector to Japan, Korea or mainland China. This page explains when flights to Taipei Songshan make sense, how the airport works, and what you can do in the neighbourhoods around it.
Taipei Songshan Airport lies in Songshan District on the northern side of the city basin, just south of the Keelung River. Because it is so central, you can often see planes gliding low over the city on approach. Taiwan's main international airport, Taoyuan, is much further out to the west, and the two are sometimes confused in search results, so always check the airport code before you book.
The airport has two terminal buildings side by side. Terminal 1 handles international and cross-strait services, while Terminal 2 is used for domestic routes to the outlying islands and the east coast. Both buildings are compact, so check-in, security and immigration are usually quick compared with larger hubs. Your e-ticket shows which terminal to use, and it is worth a glance before you set off.
The Wenhu (brown) line of the Taipei Metro stops at Songshan Airport station, right beside the terminals, and a change at Zhongxiao Fuxing or Nanjing Fuxing puts you on the rest of the network. City buses stop outside, and taxis wait at a rank by arrivals, which is often the easiest choice if you are staying in Zhongshan, Da'an or Xinyi. Ride-hailing apps also operate here. An EasyCard or similar stored-value card works on both the metro and buses.
Songshan mostly serves domestic Taiwanese routes, such as Kinmen, Matsu, Penghu, Hualien and Taitung, plus a small set of city-to-city links with Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Gimpo and Shanghai Hongqiao. Flights from Malaysia almost always arrive at Taoyuan instead, so searching this airport on its own may show only connecting itineraries. On Traveloka, use the direct-flight filter to see nonstop options and compare stopover lengths on connecting ones.
Songshan is most useful when you are already in North Asia: flying from Tokyo into central Taipei, or heading out to the islands mid-trip. If you are starting in Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Kota Kinabalu, compare our page for flights to Taipei Taoyuan, or search all Taipei airports together to see every option.
Taipei's weather shapes the busy times at Songshan. Domestic routes to the islands and the east coast get very full in summer, when Taiwanese families head to Penghu's beaches, but summer and early autumn is also typhoon season, and small island airports close quickly when winds pick up. Spring and autumn are gentler, and winter is cool and damp rather than cold.
For travellers from Malaysia, demand usually rises around school holidays, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali long weekends. Lunar New Year is also the peak for Taiwan's own domestic travel, so seats to Kinmen and other islands can sell out well ahead. Try the fare charts on this page to see which months and weekdays are usually quieter, and set a Price Alert if your dates are flexible.
One of Taipei's oldest night markets runs along a single long street next to Ciyou Temple in Songshan District. It is easy to walk end to end, and the pepper buns baked in clay ovens at its entrance draw queues every night.
A former tobacco factory has been turned into exhibition halls, design shops and a leafy pond garden. It hosts rotating shows and craft markets, and it is a pleasant place to spend a slow afternoon close to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
A steep stairway trail at the edge of Xinyi rewards a short climb with one of the classic views of the Taipei skyline. Go late in the afternoon and stay for sunset, when the towers light up below.
The Maokong Gondola lifts you from near the zoo into hills covered in tea plantations. Up top, tea houses serve local oolong and tieguanyin with views back over the city, which is lovely on a clear evening.
In the older Wanhua district, Longshan Temple is one of Taipei's most important places of worship, busy with incense, offerings and prayer from morning to night. The streets around it give a glimpse of the city before its skyscraper era.
Songshan itself and the Minsheng Community next door are quiet, residential areas with tree-lined streets and cafés, ideal if you have an early departure from the airport. Nanjing East Road, a few metro stops away, is a business corridor with plenty of eateries and quick links to the brown and green lines. Zhongshan offers boutique shopping and easy access to Taipei Main Station, while Neihu, further along the Wenhu line, suits business travellers visiting the tech parks there.
Hujiao bing are crisp buns stuffed with peppery pork and spring onion, slapped onto the wall of a clay oven and baked until blistered. Eat them hot, carefully.
A night-market staple made with small oysters, eggs and a sticky starch batter, finished with a sweet and savoury red sauce.
Soft folded buns filled with braised pork belly, pickled mustard greens, coriander and crushed peanuts, sometimes called a Taiwanese burger.
A mountain of fine ice topped with fresh mango, condensed milk and sometimes a scoop of ice cream, best in summer when mangoes are in season. Look for it at dessert shops in Yongkang Street and at the bigger night markets.
If Songshan fits your route, search it on Traveloka side by side with Taoyuan and keep the itinerary that saves you the most time on the ground.
