The host, Mitko, went out of his way to accommodate me. He made sure I was parked in a good place right at the old town boundary. Mitko gave me a quick introduction to the lay of the land in Plovdiv, pointing out the best sights and restaurants. He also gave an orientation of the room. Breakfast was pretty much a customized individual order, an omelette on day one and french toast on day two. The room was very comfortable in early October with screened windows open and no need for AC. The second floor room received ample hot water after letting the water run for a minute. Couldn't have asked for a more pleasant stay in Plovdiv.

This hotel is unsafe. The owner requested that he be paid in cash for the full stay; however, ATMs in Bulgaria do not allow large enough withdrawals at one time to pay the full amount requested. When we did not pay immediately upon arrival because we did not have enough cash, the host, Mitko, locked my family into the hotel and called the police. This was frightening for the children and completely unnecessary since we had assured him that we would pay and he had our passports as security. This was a very serious breach of safety.

Best thing about stay was Mitko, our host. Excellent information about town and Bulgaria. Best we’ve encountered. Cooked special local breakfasts. Room simple with all you need and good bathroom. Bed firm and no decor but restaurant recommendations etc enhanced our trip. Well travelled interesting man.

Hotel Roots was the best place I stayed during my tour of Bulgaria. Close to the historic centre, quiet, super clean and everything as it should be.
The owner, Mitko, is super friendly and quite a character. Cooks up a mean omelette too.

This is where you want to stay in Plovdiv. As other reviewers have mentioned, Mitko, the owner of this small modern hotel, goes above and beyond to make guests welcome. He has done a wonderful job with this new building that blends in perfectly with the area. Very comfortable in all respects. Plus he is a great chef. We had to stop him from preparing giant breakfasts every morning which he gladly does. We just couldn’t eat it all! Uses first class ingredients.
The location is perfect. It is in the old city, but you can walk just a couple of minutes to an alternate route that takes you to the beautiful modern center in a less than 15 minute walk. Truly the best of both worlds. The Old City is beautiful.
Many thanks to Mitko for being an amazing host. He knows Plovdiv and Bulgaria well. Final mention: he is a sommelier certified in Canada where he lived for many years. When he gives you advice about restaurants, listen to him. He knows his stuff. Plus, most importantly, he is a good person. He made our trip to Plovdiv a special treat.

The Roots Hotel & Wine Bar in Plovdiv was a great experience for us. Miko is a gracious host and made us feel like we were family. From the time he called us to ensure we knew how to get there to his welcoming attitude and helpful suggestions as to where to go and what to do during our 3 day stay. We went with the breakfast included option which was made fresh to order each morning. Lattes, homemade pastries and eggs made as you like were always a great start to our day. His restaurant and bar suggestions were spot on. The room was very clean and and had everything we needed. Would highly recommend to friends and family to stay here. Thanks for making our stay in Plovdiv memorable Miko!
