The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, also known as the Tamil Tigers, wanted to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the island. The Tamil Tigers group was defeated by the Sri Lankan military in 2009, thus ending the civil war.

Islam came to Sri Lanka in the 7th century, brought to the island by the Arab traders while Christianity reached the country via the Western colonist in the early 16th century.
