It was REALLY cool. Cool is the key word. It's a Grade II historic building converted from the Royal Insurance building. It's comfortable with great bathrooms and a nice lounge, the staff is lovely. The rooms are large with enormous windows and really high ceilings, but if you're expecting a standard new hotel room layout this isn't for you. It was 100% for me.

The food was plentiful and there were a lot of options. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable.

The only bad thing that I have to mention was breakfast. I would expect more healthy options for a 4* hotel - vegetables, bigger variety of ham and cheese, grilled vegetables

What a shame. I reviewed this place with fantastic reviews not that long ago but genuinely a 2/3 star hotel at best. I’ll explain why. Could have got multiple hotels of 4* rating at similar or slightly lower price easily for our Friday night but stuck with this hotel for the pool table as we love pool and amazing breakfast plus a beautiful room we experienced last time. However this is what we experienced this time. Got there 40-45 minutes early and normally you’d get your room but told could only have room if we paid a charge so decided to have a drink instead at the bar for the same price of getting room early. Went to play pool but the cues were completely broken. Asked if any other cues but none. Then at 3pm went to check in to find the kitchen wasn’t working so only a light continental breakfast was included although I’d paid extra for breakfast a month ago. When I asked more I was told it hadn’t been serving breakfast for at least 2 months. I asked why I hadn’t been informed n she shrugged. I never had any confirmation so was upset. I was told I’d get the money back for the breakfast if I complained. Then got to our room. It was awful. Peeling paint, wobbly floor tiles, horrendous view. Honestly I wish I’d just gone to premier inn round the corner. I waited to do this review as I complained at reception- which I’ve never done before n was told the manager would look at my complaint and would be in touch but nothing back.

There was no hot breakfast cos of work on the kitchen and this was explained on check in - i decided it wouldn’t be a problem cos on my previous visits the continental option was good - sadly not this morning - very limited - no croissants or pastries - the smallest muffins you have ever seen plus fruit flies on the fresh fruit selection

Unfortunately there was an issue in the kitchen meaning no hot food was available which we were unaware of until check in, choice of continental breakfast or refund via booking agent which was a time consuming process. Bar area felt soulless, minimal staff. Lady that was manning the door on Saturday night doubled up serving us drinks and was very nice. 50/50 experience with friendliness of other staff, gentleman at check in/out excellent, lady serving from bar on Saturday afternoon rude and uninterested. Basement rooms a real negative, whilst the room itself was ok other than the lumpy pillows the corridors and area outside the lift were damp and smelly and as a lone female guest I didn’t feel particularly safe walking to my room. Room reset during the day but tea, coffee etc not replenished.

They put in the basement. The room was designed for elderly guests. Because of that there is no Barrie’s for the water when you take a shower then the water is all over. It is not glamorous I

We stayed two nights. During both the fire alarm rang (at 1.30 a.m first night, at 2.30 a.m. the second night). On both occasions, with many others we walked down three flights of stairs to be told FALSE ALARM. Excuses in the morning varied. But apparently anybody vaping in any room requires alerting the entire hotel. Apart from the improbability of the relevant vaper never starting smoking at less anti-social hours, it is ludicrous that hundreds of guests have to have their night's sleep ruined because of such an unsophisticated all purpose alarm system. Even though beds were reasonably comfortable, and the rooms clean, my family will not return to this hotel until we can be assured on an uninterrupted night's sleep.
