A 10-minute walk from Gangnam Station. Nearby, there are convenience shops. Next to the hotel is a very nice and affordable Korean BBQ shop that deserves a dinner visit. The room comes with a washing machine and a Samsung standing steam and iron machine, which is very convenient for light travelers like me who bring the least number of clothing items. Counter staff are friendly and prompt in assistance, too. Daily room service can be coordinated through WhatsApp.

Food & Dining in Hotel in Iraq

A Taste of Iraqi Flavours

The culinary landscape of Iraq is a rich fusion of ancient traditions and regional influences, offering a distinct gastronomic journey for Malaysian travellers. Central to Iraqi cuisine is *Masgouf*, a method of preparing fish, typically carp, by butterflying it and grilling it over an open fire, often seasoned with tamarind and salt. This iconic dish, with its smoky flavour and tender texture, is a must-try for anyone wanting to experience the authentic taste of Iraq, a flavour profile quite different from the spices and preparations common in Malaysian kitchens.

Finding authentic *Masgouf* and other Iraqi specialties is an adventure in itself. Riverside restaurants, particularly along the Tigris River in Baghdad, are prime locations for this delicacy. For Malaysian Muslim travellers, the good news is that Iraqi cuisine is predominantly halal, with meat sourced according to Islamic dietary laws. While formal halal certification might not be as widespread as in Malaysia, the cultural adherence to halal practices means most eateries are Muslim-friendly. Exploring local markets and traditional eateries in cities like Baghdad and Basra will offer the most genuine dining experiences.

The diversity of Iraqi cuisine extends across its regions, offering unique flavours that warrant exploration. In the Kurdistan Region, dishes often feature more grilled meats, hearty stews, and a greater use of dairy products, reflecting a different cultural heritage. Basra, with its coastal proximity, excels in seafood dishes, incorporating fresh catches into its traditional recipes. These regional variations mean that travelling between different parts of Iraq provides not just a change of scenery but also a distinct evolution in culinary offerings, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the country's food culture.

When dining in Iraq, Malaysian travellers will find that meal times are generally similar to home, with lunch being the main meal of the day. Tipping is appreciated but not always mandatory; a small gratuity of around 10% for good service is customary in restaurants. Prices can vary significantly, from very affordable street food to more upscale dining experiences. Familiarizing yourself with common Arabic phrases for ordering food can enhance your interactions, and embracing the generous hospitality often extended to guests will make your dining experiences even more rewarding.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Hotel in Iraq

Navigating Cultural Nuances and Ensuring a Secure Trip

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Iraq. One significant aspect for Malaysian travellers to be aware of is the importance of hospitality. Iraqis are known for their warmth and generosity towards guests, often inviting visitors for tea or meals. It's polite to accept such invitations, even if briefly, as a gesture of appreciation. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or more conservative areas; covering shoulders and knees is generally advisable for both men and women.

When visiting religious sites, such as the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf or the Citadel in Erbil, adherence to specific etiquette is paramount. Modest dress is essential, often requiring women to cover their hair. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, and it's always best to ask permission before taking pictures of people. In public spaces, maintaining a respectful demeanour, avoiding overly loud behaviour, and being mindful of local customs regarding personal space will contribute to positive interactions with the local population.

For personal safety, it's advisable for Malaysian travellers to remain aware of their surroundings, particularly in crowded areas, and to keep valuables secure. While major tourist areas are generally safe, exercising common sense precautions is always recommended. For transportation, reputable taxi services and ride-sharing apps, where available, are generally reliable. It's wise to agree on fares before starting a journey if using traditional taxis, or to use apps that provide fare estimates upfront.

In case of emergencies, knowing the local emergency numbers is crucial. For urgent assistance, dial 112 for police and 104 for medical services. For Malaysian citizens travelling abroad, it is highly recommended to register your travel with the Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in Iraq, if one is present, or to keep their contact details handy. Travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen circumstances is also a wise investment for any international trip.

Travel Guide to Hotel in Iraq

Planning Your Journey from Malaysia

For Malaysian travellers looking to explore Iraq, the primary mode of transport is by air. Flights typically depart from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2, with connections often involving a layover in a major Middle Eastern hub such as Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul. Airlines like Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines are common choices for this route.

The total travel time, including layovers, can range from 12 to 20 hours, and booking flights in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help secure better fares, with prices varying based on the season and airline, often starting from around RM 2,500 for a round trip.

Navigating between cities within Iraq is best managed through domestic flights or by road. Major cities like Baghdad, Basra, and Erbil are connected by Iraqi Airways and other domestic carriers, offering a quicker way to cover longer distances. For intercity travel by road, buses and private car services are available. While bus travel is more economical, private cars offer greater comfort and flexibility, especially for groups or families. Journeys can be lengthy due to road conditions and security checks, so planning ample travel time is essential.

The optimal time to visit Iraq from Malaysia generally falls during the cooler months, from October to April. During this period, temperatures are more moderate, making it pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summer months, from May to September, can be extremely hot, particularly in the southern regions, which might limit daytime exploration. Visiting during the shoulder seasons can also offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds, potentially leading to more competitive hotel rates.

Before embarking on your journey to Iraq, a few pre-departure preparations are recommended. The local currency is the Iraqi Dinar (IQD). While exchange facilities are available, it's wise to carry some USD, which is widely accepted. Obtaining a local SIM card upon arrival can facilitate communication and data access. Essential apps to consider include translation tools, offline maps, and ride-sharing applications if available in your chosen cities. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay.

Visa Requirements for Malaysian Passport Holders

Malaysian passport holders planning a trip to Iraq will find that entry requirements can vary depending on the specific region within Iraq they intend to visit and the purpose of their travel. For entry into the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (including cities like Erbil and Sulaymaniyah), Malaysian citizens are typically granted a visa on arrival at Erbil International Airport, valid for a stay of up to 30 days. This process is generally straightforward, provided travellers have a valid passport and can show proof of onward travel.

For travel to federal Iraq (areas outside the Kurdistan Region), the visa application process may differ. It is often recommended or required for Malaysian citizens to obtain a visa in advance from an Iraqi embassy or consulate in their home country or a neighbouring nation. This typically involves submitting an application form, passport, photographs, and potentially an invitation letter or proof of accommodation. It is crucial to verify the most current requirements with the relevant Iraqi diplomatic mission before making travel arrangements.

Visa policies are subject to change, and it is imperative for all Malaysian travellers to confirm the latest entry regulations directly with the Embassy of Iraq or the relevant immigration authorities well in advance of their planned departure. Staying informed about any updates regarding visa types, application procedures, required documentation, and permitted lengths of stay will ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry into Iraq, allowing you to focus on enjoying your travel experience. You can book flight tickets once you have confirmed your entry requirements.
