The service that greeted us at their office in Kuala Besut, right to the boat trip to the resort was so warm and friendly! All of the personnel, from the welcome staffs, receptionists, guides at the corals, diving guides and captains, F&B staffs, and Brandon the manager. All made us feel very welcome and we truly enjoyed our stay. Looking forward for a return trip!

We have no regrets staying at the Alunan Resort. The food was fantastic and al-a-carte. Usually All-inclusive is buffet service. The Staff were extremely friendly and hated to say goodbye. The excursions were amazing, Snorkeling and Sunset Cruising our favorites. Our only caution is you must consider the stairs. There are a lot of them. Would definitely return.

We had a fantastic time at Alunan and really glad we booked here for half our stay on the Perhentian. Room - Spacious and very clean, having the deck upstairs is also a really nice touch Food - Probably the best food we ate on the Perhentian islands, both western and Malay options availabl. It is slightly more expensive but worth it in our opinion. Breakfast with the room was also great, fresh roti canai were really nice. Staff - super welcoming and friendly, especially Cel, who really made sure we were looked after the entire stay. Facilities - great quiet location, with snorkelling right off the beach, easy access to hiking path and other trips. Only hotel with an infinity pool on the island too, which we used to cool off at the end of each day!

Your Travel Guide to Besut as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Besut from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Besut from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities offers several convenient options. For those prioritizing speed, booking flight tickets to Kuala Terengganu Airport (TGG) is the most efficient method. Airlines like Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia operate flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to TGG. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour, with fares varying based on booking time and season, often ranging from MYR 150 to MYR 300 one-way.

Alternatively, bus travel provides a more economical choice for reaching Besut. Numerous bus companies offer services from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur to various stops in Besut, including Jerteh or directly to Kuala Besut jetty. The journey by bus can take approximately 6 to 7 hours, with ticket prices generally falling between MYR 40 to MYR 70. This option is ideal for budget-conscious travelers who do not mind a longer travel time.

For those who prefer to drive, the journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut is approximately 450-500 kilometers and takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic conditions. The primary route involves utilizing the East Coast Expressway (LPT 1 and LPT 2). Toll charges can add up, typically costing around MYR 50-70 for a one-way trip. This offers flexibility for those who wish to make stops along the way or travel with family.

Best Time to Visit Besut

The ideal time to plan your visit to Besut and the Perhentian Islands is generally between March and October. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with calm seas, making it perfect for island hopping, snorkeling, diving, and other water activities. The monsoon season, which usually occurs from November to February, brings heavier rainfall and rougher seas, often leading to ferry services being suspended.

Visiting during the shoulder seasons, such as March-April or September-October, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds compared to the peak months of June and July. While the weather is still favorable, you might find slightly more competitive pricing for accommodation and tours. Avoiding the peak monsoon period ensures that your travel plans are less likely to be disrupted by adverse weather conditions.

Food and Dining Near Besut — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Terengganu, and by extension Besut, is a culinary delight for any Malaysian traveler. A must-try is Nasi Dagang, a fragrant rice dish often served with a rich fish curry and various accompaniments like hard-boiled eggs and pickled cucumber. It's a breakfast staple but enjoyed throughout the day, offering a unique blend of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors that define local cuisine.

Another local specialty you should seek out is Keropok Lekor, a type of fish cracker made from fish and sago flour, often served with a sweet chili sauce. It's a popular snack and appetizer, perfect for enjoying by the beach. You'll find vendors selling freshly made Keropok Lekor in many areas, especially near coastal towns and markets.

For seafood lovers, the coastal location of Besut means an abundance of fresh catches. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are prepared in various styles, often simply seasoned and grilled to perfection, allowing the natural flavors of the seafood to shine. Enjoying these with a side of sambal belacan (shrimp paste chili) is a classic Malaysian dining experience.

Don't leave without trying Laksa Terengganu, a distinct variation of the popular noodle soup. It typically features a flavorful broth made from fish and rice flour, giving it a unique texture and taste compared to other regional laksa versions. It’s a hearty and satisfying dish that showcases the culinary heritage of the state.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Besut

When visiting Besut and the Perhentian Islands, it's important to be mindful of local customs and traditions. Terengganu is a conservative state, so dressing modestly, especially when visiting villages or religious sites, is appreciated. While beachwear is acceptable at resorts and beaches, covering up when walking through local communities is a sign of respect. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people.

Safety on the islands is generally good, but standard precautions apply. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. For water activities, always heed the advice of local guides and dive centers regarding sea conditions and safety. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance that covers water sports. The emergency number in Malaysia is 999, which can be used for police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly useful for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for e-hailing services on the mainland and can be used for transfers to Kuala Besut jetty. MySejahtera is crucial for health declarations and tracking, especially if required by local regulations. A reliable map application and a currency converter app can also be very handy during your trip.

For payments, ensure you have a mix of cash and digital payment methods. While many tourist establishments accept cards, smaller vendors and local markets may prefer cash. Having a Touch 'n Go card or eWallet is convenient for tolls and some retail purchases on the mainland. Familiarizing yourself with these apps and local practices will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey.

TYPHOID FEVER ALERT!!! Public health is aware of this and we are sure that staff knew it as well but they didn’t mention it for a sole business purposes! On a check in we got reusable bottles for their filtered water but in our room we found plastic bottled water. When asked why? We were told that some customers are sick because they ate in other restaurants outside the resort!!! First warning sign. We were all vaccinated against Typhoid fever in Canada but regardless we all got ill and landed in hospital on IV antibiotics and fluids! We were told in the hospital that they had an outbreak of typhoid due to poor sewage treatment and it can be from water, food or snorkeling around the island where even corals died due to sewage pollution! This is a NEW resort beautifully designed and VERY EXPENSIVE to allow something like this to happen!!! Everyone was sick in that resort!!! Also food selection was poor but tasty! We questioned the food handling, because they would make food and let it sit on 35 C degrees for hours! We did not have a single bite outside the resort! At night there is no entertainment, so you feel locked in, because the path to other villages is through the jungle or by boat. The doors in the rooms are cut too short and not possible to close completely, so we had all sorts of jungle insects and animals roaming around the room! Snorkeling excursions were nice but it seems we snorkelled in the sewage water!

Alunan Resort is a fantastic hotel, with wonderful staff, that made us feel very well looked after during our stay in the Perhentian Islands. They ensured our trip from the airport to and from the island was seem less and stress free. We were greeted and checked in at the Alunan office at the Besut Jetty and the 45 minute boat ride to the resort was easy. On arrival, we were promptly shown to our beautiful room, which had views of the ocean from every window. There is also a huge balcony overlooking the ocean, which was a favourite place for our morning coffee. We did 3 excursions during our stay. All 3 were extremely well organised and we were ensured memorable experiences by the guides. The Bayu restaurant provided a very tasty breakfast everyday, and we also ate there for dinner a few times. Everything we ate was excellent. The Sunset Deck was a beautiful place for a drink in the evening. The most impressive thing about Alunan however, is the wonderful staff. We were truly blown away by their kindness and attentiveness throughout our stay. They really made it the best vacation we could wish for. Thank you Alunan.

Alunan, built amongst hundred years old forests, and a panoramic view towards the crystal clear turquoise south china sea. Alunan is like the best-kept secret on the east coast of Malaysia. Kudos to the coral conservation efforts, with house reef to die for, so close to the coastline, right next to your doorstep. There are thousand and one things to do, from the reef plating, catamaran sailing, table tennis, hiking, swimming, snorkeling, diving, best of Perhentian hopping, shark and turtle sighting, you just cannot get enough of Alunan. Service and food is impeccable, room is large and airy, with amazing view from your bed and the uniqueness is you have your own rooftop deck. Wildlife is crawling, flying, and swimming all over the premises, this is as close to nature as you can get; A place that gives back to nature and is meant for people who love nature.

We had a wonderful stay at this small and quiet resort that we hope to be back. The rooms are well maintained, clean, comfortable and has a upstairs private deck with an amazing view. The food is simply delicious with a variety of Malaysian and Western dishes. The staff are very attentive and helpful, the service provided is more like a 5 stars resort. Snorkeling off the resort beach is amazing with colorful coral, fish and giant clams.

The resort was overall ok but the first impresstion wasn't that good. I booked a double room since we were only me and my husband but they gave us 1 double & 1 single bed room. no one explained us about it when we check in but when i found out and asked them later they said they 'upgraded' to triple room since the double i booked was under maintanance. However the room i got was not better room and it was the same price when i made a booking. I dont understand what was upgraded since we dont need triple room at all and why they did not asked us to understand the situation first. Anyway we stayed without changing room. Good things : They arranged a private boat from kuala besut to the island which managed thier own with resonable price and good service All food we ate in the restaurant was very tasty and restaurant staffs are all kind and frendly especialy the bar staff (sorry we did not aked his name) Recommend for someone wants to avoid crowed spot and have a peaceful holiday

Alunan is located in a quiet and absolutely pristine area. The hotel staff makes the real difference though. Everyone greets you with a genuine smile and they seem to really enjoy and are proud of being part of Alunan! They also started a coral project with efforts to rebuild the reef around the hotel bay and you can snorkel in their coral nursery. Bayu the hotel Restaurant is a delight (they grow their own salad!) and the breakfast is simply delicious (try their roti canai!) The boat captain will watertaxi you anywhere anytime of day and night. The rooms is spacious. The isolation of the rooms is not the greatest (as you would expect on a remote island but the environment is very calm, so the only thing you might hear is the rain at night).

Great location and wonderful staff. Good breakfast. Quality of food in the restaurant for dinner was below average and given the price we did not find it to be value for money. We found other places to eat for the remainder of our stay. Bathroom door was quite dirty and we found rust in the bathroom. The impression given by the hotels photographs is that the The roof top area is fairly private. This is not the case. We were overlooked by a number of other rooms which was disappointing. We were also disappointed in the view from the roof area. We took a couple of snorkelling trips which were excellent, although the pricing of the trips should be more transparent. Tax and service charges were added to our final bill for the trips. These were the only trips during our holiday that had these charges added. Similar trips can be booked in the fishing village a 10 minute walk for almost half the price. I really liked being given a reusable water bottle and there were plenty of places to refill it. However, we did still find plastic bottles thrown on the beach area. Whilst this is the fault of other people I do think that the hotel could do more to keep the beach area litter free.

We had a fabulous experience at the Alunan. The staff couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful, the room was spacious with a fantastic view, comfortable beds with soft sheets and good pillows, all in all it could not have been better. We also liked the fact that it is an eco-friendly hotel, and they are working on conservation of the coral and have hired a marine biologist to assist them.

There was a half-abandoned construction site right next to the resort which no one told us about and which is not a nice view to look at. The beach in front of the resort mostly also looked like a construction site so that you don’t really want to relax there, you’ll need to go to other nearby beaches, but they’re quite close. The water taxi to these beaches is not included in the room price and relatively pricey. Transits to other islands are also extremely overpriced (600 RM for a 45 minute boat ride). The staff was friendly and the food was decent, room was also alright but the aircon was extremely loud. Overall, certainly not a lot of value for money given the price per night and the construction site next door.

The staff were great and helpful However, since our rooms were right at the top unfortunately, ie rooms 19 n 20, it was very difficult for my mother and I to climb up the steep road and stairs. Also the stairs to the balcony were steep. This is not a resort for older people especially those with joint problems and also not suitable for small children.
