Air Itam is a town in central Penang Island that is situated at the west of George Town, is largely a suburban area home to the famous Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple. The area now known as Air Itam was first developed in the late 18th century, soon after the founding of Penang Island by Captain Francis Light in 1786. The population of Air Itam is the majority of the Chinese, followed by Malay, Indian and others. Traveling from Bandar Air Itam to City Center takes about 15 to 20 minutes and 30 minutes by public bus.
