Gong Badak, formerly known as Kuala Terengganu Utara, is a town located in the northern part of Sungai Terengganu in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. Gong Badak became developed upon the focus of establishing industrial estate areas for Terengganu. Factories that produce bricks and timber products are moved further away from the main city areas.

Gong Badak may have gotten its name from any of the three meanings for the word ‘Gong’. In Bahasa Melayu, the word ‘gong’ may refers to a traditional musical instrument made from steel and usually being hit to commemorate an event. As for the word ‘badak’, it is literally translated to the animal known as rhinoceros.

According to the local Terengganu Malay dialect, the word ‘gong’ may means an arrogant act. Another meaning of the word ‘gong’ is the term for location of a place nearby the sea coastline. This general term of ‘gong’ has been used to other areas within Terengganu to relatively defines it to a similar definition with the word ‘permatang’.

By Flight

There are flights to Kuala Terengganu provided by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly. From the airport, guests may hail a taxi to reach Gong Badak.

By Car

People driving from Kuala Lumpur may drive through the East Coast Expressway (LPT) exiting at Gemuruh exit before continuing the journey towards Gong Badak.

By Bus

The express bus terminal is located at Kuala Terengganu. Among the available express bus services are Transnasional, KKKL, Mutiara Express, Sani Express and many more. From the bus terminal, guests may hail a taxi to reach Gong Badak.

Guests may come across this drawing on the road just right outside of Dapo Pata by asking the locals on its whereabout. This is definitely the place to go if you’ve always wanted to have a photo nearly similar to The Beatles’ ‘Abbey Road’ iconic album cover.
