Gong Badak, formerly known as Kuala Terengganu Utara, is a town located in the northern part of Sungai Terengganu in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. Gong Badak became developed upon the focus of establishing industrial estate areas for Terengganu. Factories that produce bricks and timber products are moved further away from the main city areas.
Gong Badak may have gotten its name from any of the three meanings for the word ‘Gong’. In Bahasa Melayu, the word ‘gong’ may refers to a traditional musical instrument made from steel and usually being hit to commemorate an event. As for the word ‘badak’, it is literally translated to the animal known as rhinoceros.
According to the local Terengganu Malay dialect, the word ‘gong’ may means an arrogant act. Another meaning of the word ‘gong’ is the term for location of a place nearby the sea coastline. This general term of ‘gong’ has been used to other areas within Terengganu to relatively defines it to a similar definition with the word ‘permatang’.
