More about hotels in Jerteh
Jerteh — A Quiet Gateway to Northern Terengganu
Jerteh is a small town in the Besut district of Terengganu, located along the main coastal route of Peninsular Malaysia's east coast. While it may not be a tourist destination in its own right, Jerteh plays an important role as a transit point for travellers heading to the Perhentian Islands, one of Malaysia's most celebrated diving and snorkelling destinations. The town is just a short drive from Kuala Besut jetty, where boats depart for Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil.
Accommodation in Jerteh is simple and affordable, with budget hotels and guesthouses starting from RM 50 per night. Mid-range options with air conditioning and modern facilities cost RM 80–RM 130 per night. For those who prefer to stay right at the jetty area in Kuala Besut, rooms are available from RM 60–RM 150 per night.
Why Stay in Jerteh
Many travellers arrive in the Besut area late in the evening, especially those driving from Kuala Lumpur or taking overnight buses. Jerteh offers a practical overnight stop before catching the morning boat to the Perhentian Islands. The town has all essential amenities — petrol stations, ATMs, convenience stores, and local restaurants — making it easy to prepare for your island trip.
For those not heading to the islands, Jerteh is also a peaceful base for exploring the northern Terengganu coastline, which features long stretches of unspoiled beaches and traditional Malay fishing villages that offer a glimpse into authentic east coast life.
Getting to the Perhentian Islands from Jerteh
The Kuala Besut Jetty is approximately 20 minutes' drive from Jerteh. Speedboats to the Perhentian Islands run from approximately 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM during the island season (March to October), with return tickets costing RM 70–RM 80 per person. The boat journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
A marine park conservation fee of RM 30 per person is payable at the jetty for non-Terengganu residents. It is advisable to arrive at the jetty by 7:30 AM to secure your boat, especially during peak season.
Things to Do Around Jerteh
While Jerteh is primarily a transit town, the surrounding area has its own charm. Pantai Air Tawar is a scenic beach near Kuala Besut that is perfect for a quiet morning walk. The Besut River area is popular among locals for fishing and kayaking, offering a tranquil experience away from tourist crowds.
The local morning market (pasar pagi) in Jerteh is a delightful place to sample Terengganu specialities such as nasi dagang, keropok lekor, and satar — all at very affordable prices. A hearty breakfast at the market costs just RM 3–RM 7.
For cultural exploration, the wider Besut district has traditional batik-making workshops where you can watch artisans create hand-drawn batik, a craft that Terengganu is famous for. Some workshops offer hands-on sessions from RM 20–RM 40 per person.
Food and Dining in Jerteh
Jerteh's food scene reflects authentic Terengganu cuisine. Nasi dagang, a fragrant rice dish cooked with coconut milk and served with fish curry, is the signature breakfast of the east coast and costs just RM 3–RM 5. Keropok lekor (fish sausage) is another must-try, sold freshly fried at stalls for RM 1–RM 3 per portion.
For lunch and dinner, local restaurants serve nasi campur, ikan bakar (grilled fish), and laksa Terengganu at very reasonable prices of RM 5–RM 12 per meal. Fresh seafood is abundant, with grilled fish dinners costing approximately RM 15–RM 25 at roadside stalls.
Getting to Jerteh
Jerteh is located along Route 3 (the East Coast Road), approximately 500 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur — about a 6 to 7 hour drive. Buses from KL's Terminal Bersepadu Selatan serve the Besut area, with fares starting from RM 35–RM 50.
The nearest airport is Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu, about 1.5 hours' drive south of Jerteh. Flights from KL to Kuala Terengganu are available from RM 100–RM 250 one way, after which you can take a taxi or rent a car to reach Jerteh.
Best Time to Visit Jerteh and the Perhentian Islands
The island season runs from March to October, with the best weather from April to August. During this period, seas are calm and visibility for snorkelling and diving is excellent. The monsoon season from November to February brings heavy rains and rough seas — boat services to the Perhentian Islands are suspended, and many island resorts close.
If you are visiting Jerteh outside the island season, you can still enjoy the local food, culture, and mainland beaches, though options will be quieter.
