An enchanting tropical island, Pulau Tinggi is the perfect place to escape from the busy world. Situated 20 nautical miles Southeast of Mersing at the East-Coast of the South China Sea, the island is renowned for its relaxing atmosphere and sheer physical beauty. The interior of the island is mostly covered with secondary lowland Dipterocarp rainforest. It has fresh waters, fruits, rattan, timber and a sheltered harbour and coral reefs which abound with prolific marine life. It has a long coastline and white sandy beaches dotted with caves. The seas around it contain coral, fish and reef. Abundant in nature, from pristine beaches to clear turquoise waters, and coral reefs to lush rainforests, Pulau Tinggi is an ideal environment for family vacations, romantic getaways or adventure holidays. Besides its natural attractions, the island also boasts its own unique history. Due to its specific profile, the island was once nicknamed the “General’s Hat Island” by Chinese seamen centuries ago. Its sheltered harbour and fresh water resources also made it an important stopover for the spice traders of centuries past. Pulau Tinggi also boasts an interesting geography. Firstly, its highest point, located in the middle of the island, stands 600 metres above sea level. The island also comprises of 8 smaller islets that are ideal for island-hopping, swimming and snorkeling. Its long coastline, which is dotted with caves, is home to coral reefs teeming with marine life, making it a haven for underwater photography. Declared as a protected Marine Park, Pulau Tinggi is also home to a museum, a turtle hatchery, as well as a charming Malay village.

How to Get There

By Boat

Though it is a secluded and virtually untouched island, it is easily accessible, as a 30-minute speed-boat ride will bring you from the Tanjung Leman Pier to the island. Prior arrangement should be made with the operator of the TAd Marine resort to determine the time of arrival and departure to the resort. Usually the resort will make the arrangement of the speed boat to take you to the resort. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the island from the jetty. If you are driving, there is an open space car park at the jetty that costs RM8 per day.

Kampung Tanjung Balang

The main village where the population concentrate is Kampung Tanjung Balang. This village has a school, mosque, police station and clinic. Other villages are Kampung Pasir Panjang and Kampung Sebirah Besar. The north-east of the island is uninhabited as it is rocky with high cliffs.
