About

Tinggi Island in Malay that call Pulau Tinggi, is a large sparsely inhabited island, which rises 2000 ft (600 m) above sea level off the east coast of Johor, Malaysia. It was nicknamed the "General's Hat" by Chinese seamen hundreds of years ago. It is located about 20 nautical miles (37 km) southeast of Mersing, on the east coast of Johor. The journey by boat to Tinggi Island takes approximately 45 minutes. The interior of the island is mostly covered with secondary lowland Dipterocarp tropicana rainforest. It has fresh waters, fruits, rattan, timber and a sheltered harbour and coral reefs which abound with prolific marine life. It has a long coastline and white sandy beaches dotted with caves. The seas around it contain coral, fish and reef. This island has the highest residential population among the east coast Johor islands, with the latest tally estimated at 448 people, from three village settlements, Kampung Tanjung Balang, Kampung Pasir Panjang and Kampung Sebirah Besar. Pulau Tinggi is an oval resort island, located about 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) from south-east of Mersing on the east coast of Johor, Malaysia.


Pulau Tinggi is located close to several other islands, Pulau Besar, Rawa Island and Sibu Island. In ancient times, the island was named as the Island's Big Island ("General's Hat Island") by sailors. Pulau Tinggi has a clean, white sandy beach. Clear water surrounds all the beaches on the islands. This is partly due to the fact that he is facing the sea, making his beach hit by waves that draw mud from its sandy beach.The journey to Pulau Tinggi from Mersing takes 45 minutes. High Island is rich in fruits, rattan, logs and caves and coral reefs that contain many marine life. It also has a harbor of protection on its long sea line.As a resort island, Pulau Tinggi has many home and chalets. Beaches especially for snorkel enthusiasts and scuba diving are Tanjung Balang and Sebirah Besar.


How to Get There

By Ferry

The journey to Pulau Tinggi from Mersing takes 45 minutes. The interior of the island is surrounded by dipterocarp lowland forests and the island's highest point is 2,000 feet (600 meters) from the sea level.


Tourist Attractions

Rawa Island

Surrounded by clean blue waters with jungle vegetation, Rawa Island is owned by the Johor Sultanate. The island consists of two small resorts and suitable for weekend getaway with family and friends. The only way to get to Rawa Island is by boat from Mersing and Rawa Island is only 30 minutes speed boat ride or a 1 hour ferry ride. During the peak season on April to October, there are lot of ferries and speed boats moving between Mersing and Rawa, but during the off season there will be just 1 or 2 rides per day. Ferries and overnight stays can be booked with the resort office on Jalan Abu Bakar in Mersing, or booked in advance.


Endau Rompin National Park

Endau-Rompin is a beautiful national park in the southeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. The name comes from the two rivers that run through the park which is the Endau River and the Rompin River. The national park is known for having the largest remaining population of the highly endangered Sumatran rhinoceros and also other animals that live in the national park are the white-handed gibbon, Malaysian tiger, Asian elephant, wild boar, tapir, slow loris, deer, long-tail macaques and leopards. Among the many bird species that live in the park are the hornbills and kingfishers. Besides that, there are many wonderful waterfalls and visitors can also see Orang Asli tribes. Many travel agencies offer package tours to Endau-Rompin which includes transport, accommodation, meals and guided jungle trails. Entry to the park requires a special permit ticket RM10 from the Johor National Park Corporation.
