Your Travel Guide to Johor Bahru as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Johor Bahru from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Johor Bahru from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities is convenient, with multiple transport options available. For those who prefer speed and comfort, booking a flight to Senai International Airport (JHB) is an excellent choice. Flight durations are typically around one hour, and you can often find competitive MYR fares, especially if you book flight tickets in advance.

Alternatively, bus travel is a popular and budget-friendly option for many Malaysians. Numerous bus companies operate services from Kuala Lumpur's TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Johor Bahru's Larkin Sentral. The journey usually takes between four to five hours, with ticket prices generally ranging from MYR 30 to MYR 50, depending on the operator and bus type. This is a great way to see more of the Malaysian landscape.

Driving yourself offers the most flexibility. The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru is primarily via the North-South Expressway (PLUS Highway). The drive typically takes about three to four hours, depending on traffic conditions. Be prepared for toll charges, which can add up; budget around MYR 40-50 for tolls each way. This option is ideal if you plan to explore beyond Johor Bahru city center.

Best Time to Visit Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it's warm and humid throughout the year. For the most pleasant weather, consider visiting during the drier months, which generally fall between March and October. During this period, you'll experience less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring attractions, and enjoying the city's offerings without frequent interruptions from downpours.

However, it's important to be aware of the monsoon seasons. The Northeast Monsoon typically brings more rain from November to February, while the Southwest Monsoon can bring occasional showers from May to September. Despite the rain, Johor Bahru remains a viable destination year-round. Even during wetter periods, showers are often short-lived, and you can still find plenty to do. Visiting during off-peak seasons, outside of major Malaysian holidays, can also mean fewer crowds and potentially better hotel rates.

Food and Dining Near Johor Bahru — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Johor Bahru is a food lover's destination, offering a diverse culinary scene that reflects Malaysia's multicultural heritage. A characteristic Malaysian breakfast or supper is Nasi Lemak, fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with spicy sambal, anchovies, peanuts, and a hard-boiled egg. You can find excellent versions at local eateries and even some hotel breakfast spreads.

For a taste of wok-fried noodles, Char Kway Teow is a must-try. This popular dish features flat rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, chives, and a dark soy sauce, giving it a smoky, savory flavor. Another beloved local favorite is Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread often served with dhal curry or other savory gravies. It's a versatile dish perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a late-night snack.

Don't leave Johor Bahru without sampling Laksa, a spicy noodle soup that comes in various regional styles. Johor's version is often richer and sweeter, influenced by Malay and Indian flavors. And for meat lovers, Satay – skewers of marinated, grilled meat (chicken, beef, or lamb) served with a peanut sauce – is an absolute delight. These dishes represent the heart of Malaysian cuisine and are readily available throughout the city.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Johor Bahru

Understanding local customs will enhance your visit to Johor Bahru. Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, so dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques or temples, is respectful. This generally means covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, and a simple "Selamat Pagi" (Good Morning) or "Terima Kasih" (Thank You) goes a long way.

Safety in Johor Bahru is generally good, but like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure, avoid displaying excessive wealth, and be cautious of petty theft in crowded areas. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999. It's also advisable to have the MySejahtera app installed, which was crucial for health declarations and contact tracing, and remains useful for checking vaccination status or accessing health information.

To navigate the city and manage your travel needs, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for ride-hailing, offering convenient and affordable transport across the city. A Touch 'n Go eWallet is invaluable for cashless payments at many retail outlets, toll booths, and public transport. Having these apps on your smartphone will significantly streamline your experience as a Malaysian traveler exploring Johor Bahru.

After one night at the hotel, I was shocked, exhausted and traumatised. Firstly, before entering the hotel, you could smell the strong musty smell about 10 metres from the entrance. Once you enter the hotel, the smell becomes more pungent. The lifts are dark and dirty. The hallway before going to the room smells extremely musty and also reeks of cigarette smoke. The carpet in the hallways are dirty and you can see that there are dark water stains on the carpet possibly due to leaking roofs. I entered my room which was Room 1009 on the 10th floor and turned on the air-conditioner. The air-conditioner was blowing out warm air and I complained, looking if I can change rooms but the staff said that they will send their maintenance worker to fix the problem. I left the hotel for dinner and returned at night. The air-conditioner was working fine when I came back but as I lay in bed, there was a horrible foul smell. While the room had a musty smell, it did not only smell musty near the bed but there was also a foul smell. I later discovered the source of the foul smell to the air-cond remote control. The remote control smelt as if it had been touched by hundreds of sweaty hands. The foul stench of the remote control permeated throughout the room and was extremely pungent near the bed as the remote control was next to the bed. There were 2 pillows on the queen bed and one pillow had a smell that was so terrible, most people would have vomited out their dinner. I immediately threw that pillow onto the floor. Some parts of the bedsheet also had a foul smell. I also noticed stains and dried blood on the bedsheets. Obviously, both bedsheet and pillows have not been changed for a long time. After laying in bed for a few minutes, I noticed ants crawling on me. I looked at the bed and to my horror, there were many ants on the bed. I had to kill the ants one by one using one of the towels given. The toilet behind the bed had a nasty smell and I noticed many ants crawling on the toilet walls as well. As it was almost midnight by now and I was exhausted, I did not ask to switch rooms as I just wanted to catch some sleep which I desperately needed. Besides, as the other floors were equally dirty looking and foul smelling, there was no point switching rooms as they would have been the same. I had to keep the light on while I slept as I had to kill the ants every now and then. When I returned to the hotel after dinner, I noticed many scantily-clad foreign prostitutes and transvestites entering the hotel. I then found out that the rooftop was a nightclub and a place where prostitutes and transvestites gathered. Throughout the night, loud music was blasting out from the nightclub and my already stressful sleep (due to the ants and smell) was interrupted every now and then. The loud music only stopped at around 2am. At 7am, I woke up feeling exhausted but I packed up and was hoping to leave the hotel ASAP. As I left my room, I was feeling relieved as I thought my nightmare was over. As I was drowsy due to the bad sleep I had, I did not notice sharp glass shards all over the floor near the lifts. I accidentally stepped on one of the sharp glass shards which pierced my foot and caused it to bleed. The glass shards look like it came from liquor bottles smashed onto the floor by drunk patrons of the nightclub. There were also cigarette buds thrown all over the carpet. This looks like the source of the cigarette smoke smell in the hallway. This was by far the most stressful and nightmarish hotel stay in my life. From the written reviews online, it is clear that this is a horrible, nightmare hotel. The exterior of the building looks nice but on the inside, it is a nightmare and I am sure an accident will happen one day due to the rowdy nightclub on the rooftop. Do visit Room 1009, to see for yourself the horrible things happening in the hotel from the smell to the blood-stained sheets, prostitutes and nightclub at the rooftop.

Worst hotel stay ever in my entire life. First, the hotel smells bad. Looks old. Things are just very old blackish and looks haunted tbh. It was a stay with my sisters. We were assigned to room 102, we put down our stuffs, and wanted to on the light, the main light wasn't working. Cockroach in the toilet. We dialed the operator. The reception asked us to go down to the receptionist. Apparently we changed room, to room 103. Lights are dim but at least working except for the toilet light. Toilet light was spoil too. Not forgetting the cockroach. Which implies that the hotel hygience is a big problem. I tried to dial operator, the phone button wasn't even working! Oh man. It was almost midnight so we were too exhausted to even walked down the dimmed light aisle to the reception anymore. We had a bad night especially my sister. After I slept, she couldn't sleep. The light in the toilet worked at around 2am. And there are small knocking sound in the toilet 'knock knock knock'. So creepy! And she booked another hotel already and will just cancel the next day stay. The next day, we straight away check out. But despite me highlighting all the bad experiences that hit us lastnight in both rooms, the receptionist was unfriendly and looks as if it is our fault for having broken light room and cockroached hotel. Refused to give us the refund too. I mean, please, as a customer service personel, this wasn't the way to appease unpleasant customer. At least apologise for the bad experience. She wasn't even apologising. So, do not judge the book by its cover. The pictures everything looks ok in the web. But please don't even book a room here unless you want an expedition.

Rotten room with the smell of cigarettes. I was forced to buy a fragrance spray to eliminate the stench of the room. Even the new evening's Towel can come after many times. Smell pillow, bathroom ceiling with fog. The first and the last one is here.
