Best Time to Visit Arau

Arau, like much of Perlis, experiences a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The best time to visit generally falls between December and February. During these months, the weather tends to be slightly drier and more pleasant, with average temperatures hovering around 30-32 degrees Celsius. This period avoids the heaviest monsoon rains.

The monsoon season typically occurs from September to November, bringing heavier rainfall. While rain can occur at any time, this period sees a more consistent downpour, which might affect outdoor activities. The hotter and more humid months are usually from March to August. For travelers who prefer milder conditions and less rain, the December to February window is ideal for exploring Arau and the surrounding Perlis landscape.

Food and Dining Near Arau — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Perlis, and Arau within it, offers a distinct culinary landscape influenced by its proximity to Thailand and its own unique agricultural produce. One dish you absolutely must try is the local Laksa, often referred to as Laksa Perlis or Laksa Ikan. Unlike the more common asam laksa, this version typically features a fish-based broth, often with a hint of turmeric and a refreshing blend of herbs and vegetables. It’s a lighter, yet flavorful, noodle soup that’s a regional specialty.

Another local delight is the variety of Thai-influenced dishes available, given the border proximity. Look out for dishes like Pad Krapow (stir-fried basil with meat) or various Thai curries, often adapted to local tastes. You’ll also find excellent versions of Malaysian staples. Nasi Lemak, the national dish, is a breakfast favorite, and you can find it with various accompaniments. Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried flat noodle dish, is also a popular choice for lunch or dinner.

Don't leave Arau without trying Roti Canai, a flaky flatbread often served with dhal (lentil curry) or other curries for breakfast or supper. For a sweet treat, sample local kuih-muih, which are traditional cakes and desserts, often made with rice flour, coconut milk, and palm sugar. Many of these can be found at local markets or bakeries. Satay, grilled marinated meat skewers served with peanut sauce, is another crowd-pleaser available at many food stalls.

When dining in Arau, most Malay-owned restaurants and food stalls will be halal. For assurance, look for establishments that are clearly run by Malay proprietors or ask if you are uncertain. Exploring the local markets and roadside stalls is a great way to discover authentic flavors and experience the local food culture.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Arau

Malaysian culture is a beautiful blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences. In Arau, the Malay culture is prominent. Modesty in dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites like the Perlis State Mosque. While casual wear is acceptable for most tourist activities, it’s respectful to cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques or temples. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming.

Safety in Arau is generally high, as it is in most parts of Malaysia. However, like anywhere, it's wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. For any emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, or fire services.

To enhance your travel experience in Arau and Malaysia, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for e-hailing transportation, making it easy to get around. For payments, ensure you have the Touch 'n Go eWallet app, which is widely used for tolls, parking, and retail payments. MySejahtera is the government's app for health and vaccination status, which may still be relevant for certain venues or travel requirements.

Consider downloading a local map application if you prefer offline navigation, although Google Maps works well with data. Having a translation app can also be helpful if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not speak English fluently, though Bahasa Melayu is the national language. These tools can make your journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Request late check in. I called the hotel for confirmation of late check in & they noted. Until near the hotel, there are no people at the front desk and the door is locked (this part is not a problem because the door should be locked). After calling the number near the front of the glass door lobby, the staff picked up the cabbage and said "ayaq takde ayaq takde ayaq" almost 10 times and the conversation lasted 3-5 minutes with the verse takde air takde air. And my husband said takpe bang because we want to sleep from far away (I'm from Selangor), then that staff said Arau hasn't had water for 2 days. Then my husband said, I don't think I just want to stay plus we already paid for this booking. So he asked us to wait, in 5 minutes he opened the front door of the lobby and the husband entered for the check in process. And yes the husband's name is in the system. The saddest thing is that there is water in a nice room, why does the staff have to cheat? Because he slept well last time and was lazy to serve customers?
