Your Travel Guide to Besut as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Besut from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

Traveling to Besut from Kuala Lumpur and other major Malaysian cities offers several convenient options tailored for local travelers. By air, you can book a flight to Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu. Airlines like Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia operate routes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to TGG. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour, with fares often ranging from MYR 150 to MYR 300, depending on the booking time and airline. From TGG, you can take a bus or arrange a private transfer to Besut, which is about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive.

For those who prefer road travel, taking a bus is a popular and economical choice. Numerous bus companies offer services from major terminals like TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur to Besut. The journey by bus usually takes between 6 to 7 hours, with ticket prices typically ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 70. This option is ideal for travelers who want to save on flights and enjoy the scenery of Peninsular Malaysia.

Driving your own vehicle or a rental car provides the most flexibility. From Kuala Lumpur, you can take the East Coast Expressway (E8) towards Kuantan and then continue north towards Terengganu, following signs for Besut. The total driving distance is approximately 450-500 kilometers. Toll charges for this route can add up, so budget around MYR 50-70 for tolls. The drive offers a chance to stop at various towns along the way, making the journey part of the adventure.

Best Time to Visit Besut

The ideal time to visit Besut and the Terengganu coast generally falls between March and September. During these months, the weather is typically drier and sunnier, with calmer seas, making it perfect for enjoying the beaches and outdoor activities. This period avoids the main monsoon season, which usually occurs from November to February, bringing heavier rainfall and rougher seas that can affect ferry services and beach access.

While the shoulder months can offer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, the peak season from June to August sees the best weather conditions. Travelers looking for a balance of good weather and fewer tourists might find April, May, and September to be particularly appealing. Regardless of when you visit, always check the weather forecast closer to your travel dates to make the most of your trip to this beautiful part of Malaysia.

Food and Dining Near Besut — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Besut, like the rest of Terengganu, is a culinary delight for Malaysian travelers, offering a taste of authentic East Coast flavors. A must-try is Nasi Dagang, a fragrant rice dish steamed with coconut milk and fenugreek, typically served with a rich, spicy fish curry (gulai ikan) and a side of acar (pickled vegetables). You can find excellent versions at local eateries and roadside stalls throughout Besut, especially in the mornings.

Another local specialty is Keropok Lekor, a type of fish cracker made from fish paste and sago flour, often deep-fried and served with a sweet or spicy dipping sauce. It's a popular snack and appetizer found in many coastal towns. For those who enjoy noodles, Terengganu Laksa, with its distinct broth made from fish and flavored with herbs, is a refreshing and savory option that differs significantly from other regional laksa variations.

Don't leave Besut without trying some of the local seafood, which is incredibly fresh given its coastal location. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are common offerings, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Many restaurants and warungs (small food stalls) will have daily catches available. For a sweet treat, look for local kuih (traditional cakes and pastries) and desserts made with coconut milk and palm sugar.

When dining in Besut, you'll find that most establishments are halal-certified or are run by Muslim proprietors, making it easy for Muslim travelers to enjoy the local cuisine with confidence. Exploring the local markets and food courts is a great way to discover these authentic dishes and experience the true flavors of Terengganu.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Besut

Terengganu, including Besut, has a culture that is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions and Malay customs. Modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites like mosques. When exploring villages or interacting with locals, dressing respectfully, particularly for women, means covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally friendly and welcoming, so engaging with locals can enrich your travel experience.

Safety in Besut is generally high, as it is in most parts of Malaysia. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services. It's also a good idea to have the contact details for your hotel readily accessible.

To enhance your travel experience in Besut, several apps are highly recommended for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation. For digital payments and managing your finances, the Touch 'n Go eWallet app is widely used for various transactions, including parking and tolls. MySejahtera, the government's health and contact tracing app, may still be useful for checking into certain venues or for health advisories.

Other useful apps include Google Maps for navigation, which works well in Malaysia, and perhaps a translation app if you plan to venture into areas where English might be less commonly spoken. Its a dead town..nothing special. No one goes to islands. Hotel is totally rundown. Bed, bath and room is bad. Room grown with spider web, lizards nest and ants nest. Have not seen cockroach yet. Reception is quite friendly though. Hotels.com info is absolutely outdated. Used to be a transit hotel for those going to/from the islands

I understand this isn't a 4 or 5 star hotel, but I wasn't expecting towels and sheets that were stained black and yellow. There were actually black specks on towels. And there were bugs crawling all over the room. I had a hard time falling asleep because I was so freaked out by how many bugs there were. There was mold all over the toilet, and spiders in the bathroom. The A/C didn't work, there was no remote to the TV, and no WiFi. The staff was kind enough, but it didn't make up for the condition of the hotel.

The only positive thing I can say about this hotel is its practical location to the boats to get to the Perhentian islands (not even a 2 minute walk). Other than that it is somewhere I will never stay again; our bed had no cover, the sheet was stained, as were the pillows, and even the towels if we wanted to shower, as well as the floor! My boyfriend and I stayed one night and slept terribly, fully clothed trying to not touch the stains on the mattress sheet. It was if the sheets and pillows hadn't been washed or replaced in a while...yet they charge close to $40 a night?!

The toilet and the room were so dirty. I was so surprised and shocked to see that kind of toilet was still exists in 2017. The aircon was leaking at all time . The lady at reception was so rude . I booked a room of 4 single beds. Once I checked in, the reception informed it was a room of 2 double decker bed but with one bed broken. We had to move to another room which we had to pay extra fees. When we decided to move to the ground floor, she gave me a room for 3 people with the price for 5 people..

I had a very very low expectation after reading numerous review on this hotel.however it doesn't even meet my low expectation. The only great thing about the hotel is the distance to the jetty. Very near.

My first impression of the property was "what have I done". It's okay for a few hours stay. We had a room for 3. We carried our own sheets/towels. There was no water at all in our bathroom. Wifi was not bad. Its near the beach but the beach is not pleasant. Being Ramadan period most of the shops were closed.

I arrived at the hotel at 9.30 pm but unfortunately my bathroom has no light. I ask them to repair or change my room but the manager asked me to repaired it myself coz their tech only avalaible at 11.30 pm!!What the hell!!! I stay there to rest not to repair the lamp!!!!Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! The room also dirty! The bedsheet was smelly, No drinking water and only one tv channel! The old chinese man as a manager was so so rude!! I’ll not stay at this hotel again even it is free!! I paid RM 117 thru Hotel.com but the hotel published rate only RM 110. I felt so regret and so sad to stay at this WORST hotel!!

Good stop over if you can't make Perhentians. This little village was quiet, not many of restaurants open on sunday. Hotel comfortable and close to Jetty. Staff very friendly and helpful.

This hotel was basic, clean and convenient for my overnight stay before I caught the early morning ferry. Staff were pleasant on check-in, able to answerr my questions. The room was very basic, but clean. Great location for the ferry.
