Your Travel Guide to Sandakan as a Malaysian Traveler

How to Get to Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and Major Malaysian Cities

The most convenient way to travel to Sandakan from Kuala Lumpur and other major cities in Peninsular Malaysia is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Sandakan Airport (SDK). Flight durations are typically around 2.5 to 3 hours. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book in advance, making it an accessible option for many Malaysian travelers. Consider using book flight deals on Traveloka to secure the best prices.

For those who prefer overland travel, bus services are available, though this is a significantly longer journey. Buses depart from major terminals like TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) in Kuala Lumpur. The trip can take upwards of 20-24 hours, often involving a ferry crossing or a route through Sabah's interior. While more time-consuming, it can be a more budget-friendly option, with ticket prices typically ranging from MYR 100 to MYR 150 one way.

Driving to Sandakan is also an option for adventurous travelers, particularly those already in Sabah or on a longer road trip. The journey from Kota Kinabalu, for instance, takes approximately 5-6 hours via the Pan Borneo Highway. Toll charges are minimal on these routes. This method offers the most flexibility for exploring the region at your own pace, allowing for spontaneous stops along the way.

Best Time to Visit Sandakan

Sandakan enjoys a tropical rainforest climate, meaning it is warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit Sandakan for most Malaysian travelers is generally during the drier months, which typically fall between March and October. During this period, you can expect less rainfall, making it more pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the natural attractions.

However, it's important to note that Sabah experiences rainfall year-round, and short, heavy showers can occur even in the dry season. The monsoon season usually brings more consistent rain, typically from November to February. While this might mean fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, it could also impact your ability to fully enjoy outdoor excursions. Regardless of the season, always pack light, breathable clothing and rain protection.

Food and Dining Near Sandakan — What Malaysian Travelers Must Try

Sandakan, like the rest of Sabah, offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its diverse cultural influences. A must-try for any Malaysian traveler is the fresh seafood, given Sandakan's coastal location. Grilled fish, prawns, and crabs, often prepared with local spices and served with sambal, are incredibly popular and readily available at local restaurants and seafood markets.

Another local specialty you should sample is the Tuaran Mee. While originating from Tuaran town, this springy egg noodle dish is a favorite across Sabah and can be found in many eateries in Sandakan. It's typically stir-fried with vegetables, meat, and sometimes seafood, offering a satisfying and flavorful meal. Look for it in local coffee shops (kedai kopi).

For those who enjoy spicy and flavorful soups, Sabah Laksa is a unique regional variation worth trying. Unlike its counterparts in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah Laksa often features a lighter, more aromatic broth, sometimes with a coconut milk base, and is usually served with shredded chicken, prawns, and bean sprouts. It’s a refreshing and delicious dish, perfect for a warm Sandakan day.

Don't forget to try local desserts and snacks too. Kuih-muih, a variety of traditional cakes and sweets, are abundant. Also, keep an eye out for fresh tropical fruits like durian (in season), mangoes, and rambutan, which are often sold by roadside vendors. Exploring the local food scene is an integral part of the Sandakan experience for any Malaysian visitor.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Sandakan

Sandakan is home to a diverse population, including indigenous groups like the Bajau and the Orang Sungai, alongside Malay, Chinese, and other communities. Respect for local customs and traditions is appreciated. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Malaysians are generally known for their hospitality, and a friendly demeanor goes a long way.

Safety in Sandakan is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or at night. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. For emergencies, the national emergency number is 999, which connects you to police, ambulance, and fire services.

To enhance your travel experience, several apps are highly recommended for Malaysian travelers. Grab is essential for convenient e-hailing transportation around Sandakan. For payments, ensure you have the Touch 'n Go eWallet app for easy transactions at many places. MySejahtera, the government's health app, might still be useful for checking in at certain venues or for health advisories. Having these apps on your smartphone will make navigating and managing your trip much smoother.

This property is in a great location and has great staff, with good working air con but unfortunately that’s where for us the good points end. We were in room S1 and whilst it could be a fab room, it’s worn and dangerous. We had to get a draft excluder on the door to stay mozzys coming in, the sink in the bathroom was coming off the wall when we arrived, the bunk beds creaked badly all night and worst of all, the shower had bare electrical wires on the unit by the shower head. We didn’t sleep well at all. It’s cheap but I would not return.
